Metallics JBLS8G – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size lag bolt is the Metallics JBLS8G, and how many come in a jar?
The JBLS8G is a 1/4 inch by 5 inch hex head lag bolt, hot dip galvanized steel, packed 100 to a jar. The jar of 100 is also the order minimum, so you buy it by the full count rather than per piece. Measured thread diameter runs 0.237 to 0.260 inch at 10 threads per inch.
2) Can I use these galvanized lag bolts outdoors or in a damp location?
Yes. The galvanized finish on these 1/4 x 5 lag screws is what they are made for, corrosive environments, so exterior strut and conduit support, damp mechanical rooms, and wet locations are the intended use. For plain dry interior work a zinc plated lag will do the same mechanical job at less cost.
3) How strong are these lag bolts, and will they meet a Grade A spec on my drawing?
Tensile strength is 60,000 psi minimum with hardness at Rockwell B70 to B100, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. Dimensionally they are built to ASME B18.2.1-1996. That 60 ksi minimum is the standard commercial lag screw strength level, so if the drawing calls for a higher grade alloy fastener, this is not the part.
4) What size pilot hole do I drill for a 1/4 inch lag screw, and does it need one?
The JBLS8G has a gimlet point and spaced threads, so it will start itself in soft wood, but a 5 inch lag in anything dense still wants a pilot. Drill the pilot to roughly the shank root, under the 0.237 to 0.260 inch thread diameter, and drive it with a wrench on the hex head rather than an impact to avoid snapping the 1/4 inch shank.
5) Are these lag bolts Buy American and ARRA compliant for a government or institutional job?
Both the ARRA and Buy American compliance fields on the JBLS8G are flagged compliant, with country of origin China. If your contract language requires domestic melt and manufacture rather than general Buy American program compliance, verify against the specific contract clause before you spec these.
6) Do these lag bolts come with washers, or do I need to order those separately?
Washers are not part of the jar, it is 100 lag bolts only. Lags bearing on wood or on a strut flange normally get a flat washer under the head, so add galvanized flat washers for 1/4 inch separately if your detail calls for them.
7) Is a 5 inch lag bolt too long for my application, and can I get a shorter one?
At 5 inches of length the JBLS8G is meant for thick framing, blocking, or going through a plate into a stud, not for thin material where the point would come through the back. Metallics lists other sizes and quantities in the BLS and JBLS series by request, so a shorter 1/4 inch lag is available if 5 inches overshoots your embedment.
