1) Will a 3/8-16 Grade 5 hex bolt thread into a standard 3/8 inch coarse nut or tapped hole?
Yes. The JG5HC25 is a 3/8-16 bolt, 16 threads per inch, which is the standard coarse (UNC) pitch for 3/8 inch fasteners, so it mates with any 3/8-16 nut, coupling, strut channel nut or tapped hole. Shank diameter runs 0.3690 to 0.3750 inch, and the thread conforms to ASME B18.2.1-2012, so it also drops through a nominal 7/16 inch clearance hole.
2) Is a Grade 5 zinc bolt strong enough for hanging motors and equipment, or do I need Grade 8?
Grade 5 is the normal choice for mounting motors to machinery and for general mechanical equipment anchoring. For thicker build-ups or through-bolting heavier channel, step up to a longer length in the same G5HC/JG5HC series.
6) Are zinc plated Grade 5 hex bolts OK outdoors or in a wet mechanical room?
The plating is zinc on steel, which handles dry interior and sheltered service well. For a damp mechanical room, a cooling tower deck, a rooftop curb or anything washed down regularly, zinc plating will eventually bloom and rust at cut threads and wrench marks. Hot dip galvanized or stainless is the better call for direct weather exposure.
