Metallics JHTB44 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a 3/8-16 hex tap bolt thread into standard strut channel nuts and threaded rod couplings?
3/8-16 is the standard UNC coarse thread in that diameter, and the JHTB44 is cut right hand at 16 threads per inch, so it mates with any 3/8-16 UNC channel nut, insert, or tapped hole. It will not thread into a 3/8-24 fine-thread hole. The thread is made to IFI-199 (2014).
2) How strong is the Metallics JHTB44 steel hex tap bolt?
Minimum tensile strength is 60,000 psi, with hardness in the Rockwell B69 to B100 range. That is a standard low-carbon steel grade bolt, fine for hanging conduit, strut, fixtures, and equipment supports. If your drawing calls out a Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolt for a structural or high-load connection, specify that instead.
3) Can I use the Metallics JHTB44 bolt on a Buy American or ARRA federal project?
No. The JHTB44 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If you are buying for a federal, state DOT, or federally funded institutional job with domestic sourcing language in the spec, this is the wrong line item and you need a domestically produced fastener.
4) Is the zinc plating on this hex tap bolt suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
The JHTB44 is zinc plated steel. Zinc plating is a dry-to-damp-interior finish; it gives light corrosion resistance for indoor electrical and mechanical work but will eventually rust in weather, washdown areas, or coastal exposure. For those openings choose the 18-8 stainless version of the hex tap bolt instead of the steel-zinc.
5) Do I need a nut with a hex tap bolt, or does it thread into the part itself?
A hex tap bolt is meant to thread directly into a tapped hole, so nothing else is required when you are fastening into a strut insert, channel nut, equipment housing, or a nut already in place. No nut or washer is supplied with the jar. With only 3/4 inch of length on the JHTB44, allow for the material thickness you are clamping plus enough remaining thread for full engagement in the tapped part.
