Metallics JHTB60 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size and length is the Metallics JHTB60 hex tap bolt?
It's a 3/8-16 hex tap bolt, 4 inches long, with right hand threads at 16 threads per inch. The 16 TPI on a 3/8 diameter is UNC coarse thread, so it mates with standard 3/8-16 nuts, strut channel nuts, and tapped coarse-thread holes.
2) Is a hex tap bolt threaded all the way to the head, or does it have a shoulder like a hex cap screw?
A tap bolt is fully threaded. That's the whole point of the JHTB60: it's listed for complete thread engagement applications, so you get usable thread right up under the hex head instead of an unthreaded grip length. If your joint needs a plain shank through the clearance hole, a hex cap screw is the better choice; if you're threading into channel nuts, tapped holes, or stacking washers and spacers of varying thickness, the tap bolt lets you take up whatever grip you end up with.
3) Is a zinc plated steel tap bolt OK for outdoor or damp locations?
The JHTB60 is steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating is a general purpose indoor and protected-location coating, fine for dry interior electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning work. For wet, washdown, coastal, or corrosive environments, step up to the stainless version of the series (the JSHTB 18-8 stainless tap bolts) rather than zinc plated steel.
4) Does the Metallics JHTB60 meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a public job?
Both the Buy American Compliant and ARRA Compliant flags on the JHTB60 read C. Country of origin is listed as multiple. On a federally funded job where the spec demands documented domestic origin, get origin confirmed for the specific lot before you submit it.
5) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JHTB60, and can I buy just a few?
They ship as a jar of 50, and 50 each is the order minimum, so the jar is the smallest unit. The filled jar weighs 2613 g. Metallics does make other sizes and quantities in the HTB, JHTB, and JSHTB tap bolt line on request if 3/8-16 x 4 in a 50 count is not what your job needs.
6) Do nuts or washers come with the JHTB60 tap bolts?
No. The jar contains 50 bolts only. Order 3/8-16 hex nuts, flat washers, and lock washers separately, and size strut channel nuts to 3/8-16 if you're hanging from channel.
7) Will a 4 inch long 3/8-16 tap bolt be too long for my connection?
At 4 inches of fully threaded length, this one is meant for thick stack-ups: multiple layers of channel, backing plates, wood blocking, or clamp assemblies. If your total grip is an inch or less you'll be left with a lot of exposed thread past the nut, which is legal but awkward in a tight ceiling cavity. The same JHTB series runs shorter lengths, so step down rather than cutting these off.
