Metallics UB013 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do the nuts come with the Metallics UB013 U-bolt, or do I order them separately?
Two hex nuts ship with each U-bolt, so nothing extra is needed to make up the connection. The nuts are Grade A per ASTM A563 and thread onto the 5/16-18 right-hand thread. You'd still supply your own saddle, channel, or backing plate if the application calls for one.
2) Will a Metallics UB013 U-bolt meet a Buy American requirement on a federal job?
The UB013 is flagged both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is what a government, school, or healthcare procurement file usually needs for a fastener line item. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so if your spec demands a single named origin, confirm that separately against the lot you receive.
3) What thread does a 5/16-18 U-bolt have, and will standard 5/16 nuts fit it?
It's a 5/16 inch diameter thread at 18 threads per inch, right hand, made to ANSI/ASME B1.1. That is the standard 5/16-18 UNC coarse series, so any off-the-shelf 5/16-18 nut or washer threads on. The nuts supplied are dimensioned to ASME B18.2.2 and measure 0.489 to 0.500 inch across the flats with a height of 0.258 to 0.273 inch.
4) Is a zinc plated steel U-bolt okay for outdoor or damp locations?
The UB013 is carbon steel with a zinc finish, which is a plating for general indoor and protected service. It handles typical mechanical room, ceiling, and interior conduit support work. For sustained outdoor exposure, washdown areas, or coastal sites, specify hot dip galvanized or stainless instead, since zinc plating is a thin sacrificial coating.
5) How many U-bolts come in a bag of Metallics UB013?
They're bagged 10 to a bag, with a 10 each order minimum, and each unit includes its two nuts. The bag weighs 635 g. Other sizes and quantities can be requested if a job needs a different pipe diameter or a larger count.
