Metallics UBS013 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size pipe or tube will the Metallics UBS013 U-bolt clamp?
The UBS013 is a 5/16-18 U-bolt with a 1-3/4 inch inside width and 2-11/16 inch leg length, so it wraps round stock or tube up to about 1-3/4 inches across. Measure the outside diameter of what you are clamping, not the nominal pipe size, since the 1-3/4 inch opening is the hard limit.
2) Is the Metallics UBS013 U-bolt stainless, and can it go outdoors or in a wet area?
It is 18-8 stainless steel, with nuts to ASTM F594 (the stainless nut standard), so it holds up outdoors, in damp mechanical rooms, and in washdown areas far better than plain or zinc-plated steel. 18-8 is the common 300-series austenitic grade used for general corrosion resistance.
3) Do the nuts come with the Metallics UBS013 U-bolt or do I order them separately?
Two hex nuts ship with each U-bolt, so nothing extra is needed to make it up. You still need a saddle or backing plate if your application calls for one, since none is included.
4) How many U-bolts are in a bag of Metallics UBS013?
They come bagged 10 per pack, and 10 each is the order minimum. Metallics also offers other sizes and quantities in the UBS series by request.
5) Does the Metallics UBS013 U-bolt meet Buy American and ARRA requirements for a public project?
Metallics lists the UBS013 as both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is what a government, school, or healthcare procurement file usually needs on fasteners. Country of origin is listed as multiple.
6) What standard do these U-bolt nuts conform to for a submittal?
Dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2, threads ANSI/ASME B1.1, and the stainless nut material ASTM F594. Those three are typically what a spec reviewer wants cited for a stainless U-bolt assembly.
7) What wrench size fits the nuts on this 5/16-18 stainless U-bolt?
The hex is 0.489 to 0.500 inch across the flats, which is a 1/2 inch wrench or socket. Nut height runs 0.258 to 0.273 inch. Threads are right hand, 18 per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1.
8) What trades use a 5/16-18 stainless U-bolt like this one?
Metallics lists it for the electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning industries: securing conduit runs, hanging pipe and tube from strut or angle, and clamping rod or rail. The stainless makes it the pick where a plated carbon steel U-bolt would rust out.
