Metallics UB011 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Metallics UB011 come with nuts, or do I order those separately?
Two hex nuts ship with each U-bolt, so nothing extra is needed to make up the clamp. The nuts are Grade A per ASTM A563 and the U-bolt body is ASTM A307 steel. You still supply whatever you are bolting to: strut, channel, angle, or a backing plate.
2) What thread is on the Metallics UB011 U-bolt legs?
5/16-18 right-hand thread, 18 threads per inch, to ANSI/ASME B1.1. That means any standard 5/16-18 hex nut, washer, or channel nut will run on the legs if you need to add hardware beyond the two nuts supplied.
3) Will the UB011 U-bolt hold up in a damp mechanical room or outdoors?
The UB011 is steel with a zinc finish, which suits indoor and sheltered mechanical work. Zinc plating gives moderate corrosion resistance only, so for direct weather exposure, coastal air, or wash-down areas a stainless U-bolt is the better call.
4) Is the Metallics UB011 U-bolt acceptable on a Buy American or ARRA-funded job?
The UB011 is flagged compliant for both ARRA and Buy American requirements, which is what a government, school, or healthcare procurement file usually needs to see on a fastener line item. Country of origin is listed as multiple.
5) How many U-bolts come in a bag of Metallics UB011?
The UB011 is bagged and sold in a minimum of 10 each, so one order unit gives you ten U-bolts with twenty nuts total. Other sizes and quantities are available by request if a job needs a different pipe size or a larger count.
6) What are the hex nut dimensions on the UB011, and what wrench do I need?
The supplied hex nuts measure 0.489 to 0.500 inch across the flats with a height of 0.258 to 0.273 inch, dimensioned to ASME B18.2.2. A 1/2 inch wrench or socket fits them.
7) What trades actually use a U-bolt like this?
The UB011 is a general pipe and conduit clamping part used across electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning work: hanging or anchoring 1 inch pipe and conduit to strut, angle iron, or channel. Electricians and mechanical contractors buy it by the bag for repeat runs.
