Metallics JG8HC42 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is a Grade 8 bolt worth it over a Grade 5 for strut, hanger and equipment mounting?
Grade 8 is the move when the joint sees higher clamp load or shock than a Grade 5 can carry. The JG8HC42 is medium carbon steel, heat treated, rated 150,000 psi minimum tensile and 130,000 psi minimum yield, with a hardness of Rockwell C33-39. For light strut and general hanger work a Grade 5 is usually enough; for fleet, equipment anchoring and high-vibration mechanical connections the Grade 8 gives you the margin.
2) Do Metallics Grade 8 hex bolts meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a public project?
No. The JG8HC42 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with multiple countries of origin. For federally funded work carrying domestic sourcing clauses, specify a domestic fastener instead.
3) What size wrench or socket fits a Metallics Grade 8 5/16-18 hex bolt?
The hex head measures 0.489 to 0.500 inch across the flats, so a 1/2 inch wrench or socket is the right tool. Head type is a standard hex cap screw head.
4) Can I use these zinc plated Grade 8 bolts outdoors or in a wet mechanical room?
The finish is zinc plating over steel, which handles indoor and sheltered conditions and incidental moisture. It is not a stainless or hot-dip product, so for direct weather exposure, coastal air, or anything submerged or chronically damp, choose a stainless or hot-dip galvanized fastener instead. Note also that Grade 8 plated bolts should not be substituted into applications calling for a corrosion-resistant grade.
5) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JG8HC42, and can I buy fewer?
These ship 100 to a jar, and the jar is the minimum order unit, so 100 pieces is the smallest buy. The full jar weighs 1116 g. Other sizes and quantities in the G8HC/JG8HC Grade 8 hex bolt series can be requested.
6) What grip length will a 3/4 inch long 5/16-18 Grade 8 bolt actually give me?
At 3/4 inch overall length under the head, the JG8HC42 is a short cap screw suited to thin assemblies, strut clamps, brackets and tapped holes. Figure your material stack plus washers plus full nut engagement inside that 3/4 inch; if you are stacking more than about half an inch of material, step up to a longer length in the same series.
7) What steel are these Grade 8 bolts made from?
Medium carbon steel to AISI 1021-1045, heat treated, then zinc plated. That material and heat treat is what produces the Rockwell C33-39 hardness and the 150,000 psi tensile rating.
8) Are these bolts suitable for electrical and HVAC trade work, or are they automotive only?
Both. Metallics lists the Grade 8 hex bolt line for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work, and the same bolt is used in automotive and fleet applications where a Grade 5 does not give enough tensile strength.
