Metallics JG8HC17 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is a Grade 8 bolt stronger than the Grade 5 bolts I normally stock?
Yes, noticeably. This is a Grade 8 cap screw rated at 150,000 psi minimum tensile and 130,000 psi minimum yield, with hardness Rockwell C33-39. Grade 5 runs well below that. It is the fastener to use where a Grade 5 will not carry the load, which is why these get used in automotive and fleet work. The tradeoff is that Grade 8 is harder and less ductile, so it is less forgiving of shock and misalignment.
2) Can I use the Metallics JG8HC17 on a federally funded or Buy American job?
No. These Grade 8 hex bolts are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project carries a domestic sourcing requirement, you need a domestically produced fastener instead.
3) What size wrench or socket fits the head on this 5/16-18 Grade 8 hex bolt?
Head width across the flats is 0.489 to 0.500 inch, so a 1/2 inch wrench or socket is the right tool.
4) How many bolts come in a jar, and can I order just a handful?
These ship as a jar of 100, and the jar is the order minimum, so 100 pieces is the smallest buy. The filled jar weighs 1202 g. Metallics does make other sizes and quantities available by request.
5) Will a zinc plated Grade 8 bolt hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The JG8HC17 is medium carbon steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles indoor and sheltered damp conditions, which covers typical electrical, plumbing and HVAC work. For direct weather exposure, salt, or coastal air, zinc plated carbon steel is not the right call long term, and heat-treated Grade 8 steel is also susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement, so stainless or hot dip galvanized is the better choice in those spots.
6) Will a 7/8 inch long bolt be long enough for my strut and bracket stack?
At 7/8 inch overall shank length, the usable grip after a nut and washers is short. Figure the thickness of everything you are clamping plus enough thread for the nut to fully engage. On a 5/16-18 bolt that means roughly 5/16 inch of thread into the nut, which leaves about half an inch of grip. Thicker stacks need a longer bolt in the same G8HC and JG8HC series.
7) What steel is this Grade 8 cap screw made from?
Material standard is AISI 1021 to 1045, a medium carbon steel, heat treated to reach Grade 8 properties at Rockwell C33-39 hardness. That is the usual spec basis for an SAE Grade 8 cap screw rather than an alloy steel structural bolt.
