Metallics JG5HTB70 Bolts 5/8-11 X 3-1/2 G5 Hx Tap Blt S (Jar 25)

A hex tap bolt is fully threaded from the head to the point, which is what separates it from a hex cap screw with a plain shank. That matters when you are bolting into a tapped hole in a motor foot or a machine base, since you get engagement no matter how deep the hole runs. Thread is 5/8-11 UNC, right hand, to ASME B18.2.1-2012.

Grade 5, with 105,000 psi minimum tensile and 105,000 psi minimum yield as published, and a hardness of Rockwell C19-30. It is medium carbon steel, heat treated, in the AISI 1008-1026 range. That puts it well above an unmarked Grade 2 fastener for motor mounting and machinery work, and below a Grade 8 if your drawing calls one out specifically.

Body diameter on the JG5HTB70 measures 0.6170 to 0.6250 inch, so a 5/8 inch clearance hole is a tight fit; drill 11/16 inch for normal clearance through the mounting foot. If you are tapping the mating part, a 5/8-11 UNC tapped hole is what the bolt threads into.

Across the flats the hex head measures 0.922 to 0.938 inch, which is a 15/16 inch wrench or socket. Head height runs 25/64 inch, and usable wrenching height is 0.269 inch, so a deep socket is not required but the wrench has to seat fully on that short bearing surface to pull the bolt to torque.

The finish here is zinc plating over steel, which is a general indoor and sheltered-use coating. It will handle a dry mechanical room, a motor base, or truck and automotive repair work without issue. For sustained outdoor exposure, washdown areas, or anywhere salt is present, specify hot dip galvanized or 18-8 stainless in the same 5/8-11 x 3-1/2 size instead; plated zinc will bloom white and then rust.

Metallics flags the JG5HTB70 as compliant for both ARRA and Buy American purposes. Country of origin on the part is China. If your specification is written to a domestic-melt or domestic-manufacture clause rather than the ARRA/Buy American designation, check the clause language against that origin before you submit it.

For bolting a motor foot down to a machine base or a tapped frame, the tap bolt is the one you want, because the full length of thread engages whatever depth of tapped hole you have. A partially threaded hex cap screw is the better pick when you want the unthreaded shank to carry shear across a joint line or to act as a locating body in a reamed hole. This 5/8-11 x 3-1/2 Grade 5 version is sold for exactly that motor-to-machinery duty, and it also sees a lot of automotive and truck repair use.

The jar contains 25 bolts only. No nuts, flat washers, or lock washers are packed with it. Threading into a tapped hole you need nothing else, but for a through-bolted joint plan on 5/8-11 hex nuts and hardened washers to suit the Grade 5 clamp load, ordered separately.
