Metallics JG8HC764 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is a Grade 8 bolt stronger than Grade 5, and when do I need it?
Yes. The JG8HC764 is Grade 8, rated 150,000 psi minimum tensile and 130,000 psi minimum yield, with hardness Rockwell C33-39. That's the step up from Grade 5, used in automotive and fleet work where the joint load exceeds what a Grade 5 will carry. If your print calls out Grade 5, a Grade 8 is harder and less ductile, so don't substitute without checking the engineering.
2) What material and coating are these Grade 8 hex bolts?
Medium carbon steel, heat treated, to AISI 1021-1045, with a zinc finish. Zinc plating gives mild corrosion protection for indoor and sheltered outdoor use; it is not a marine or chronic-wet-exposure coating.
3) How many bolts come in a jar of the Metallics JG8HC764?
25 bolts per jar, and the jar is the order minimum. The jar packaging keeps a single size together on the truck or in the shop bin rather than loose in a bag.
4) Do these Metallics Grade 8 bolts meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a federal job?
The JG8HC764 is flagged compliant for both ARRA and Buy American in the manufacturer's data, with country of origin listed as China. On a federally funded job, submit those flags with your documentation and let the contracting officer confirm against the specific clause in your contract.
5) Are nuts and washers included with these bolts?
No. The jar contains 25 hex cap screws only. Order Grade 8 hex nuts and hardened flat washers separately; pairing a Grade 8 bolt with a soft washer or a lower-grade nut throws away the strength you paid for.
6) Can I get this Grade 8 hex bolt in a different diameter or length?
Yes, the G8HC and JG8HC series runs other diameters, lengths and pack quantities, available by request. The JG8HC764 itself is the 7/16-14 x 2-1/2 zinc-plated version in a 25-count jar.
