Metallics JG8HC762 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread does the Metallics JG8HC762 7/16 hex bolt use, and will it take a standard 7/16-14 nut?
It is a 7/16-14 thread, 14 threads per inch, which is the UNC (coarse) pitch for 7/16 inch diameter. Any standard 7/16-14 UNC nut or tapped hole will take it. Measured shank diameter runs 0.4305 to 0.4375 inch. If your mating hardware is 7/16-20 fine thread, this bolt will not thread in.
2) Is a Grade 8 bolt actually stronger than Grade 5, and when do I need it?
Yes, and the numbers show the gap. This bolt is Grade 8 with 150,000 psi minimum tensile and 130,000 psi minimum yield, hardened to Rockwell C33-39. Grade 5 tops out well below that. Go to Grade 8 on high-load, vibration-prone joints, automotive and fleet work, equipment mounts and structural brackets where a Grade 5 would be at its limit. For light-duty bracketry and general assembly, Grade 5 or Grade 2 is usually enough.
3) Do these bolts meet Buy American and ARRA requirements for a federal or public project?
The JG8HC762 Grade 8 hex bolt is flagged compliant for both Buy American and ARRA. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so if your specification requires a single documented origin for the lot, request origin documentation against the shipment you receive.
4) What wrench or socket size fits this Grade 8 hex bolt head?
The hex head measures 0.612 to 0.625 inch across the flats, so a 5/8 inch wrench or socket is the correct size. Head height is 19/64 inch, which matters if you are working in a counterbored or tight-clearance pocket.
5) Can I use these zinc-plated Grade 8 bolts outdoors or in a wet location?
The bolts are medium carbon steel with a zinc plated finish. Zinc gives moderate protection for indoor, covered and intermittently damp service, but it is a sacrificial coating that wears and will eventually rust in constant wet, coastal salt or chemical exposure. For permanently exposed or marine work, specify hot dip galvanized or stainless instead. Note that stainless will not give you Grade 8 strength.
6) How many bolts come in a jar, and is there a minimum order?
Each jar holds 25 bolts and the pack weighs 1134 g. The order minimum is 50 each, so you are buying in multiples that work out to two jars at a time.
7) What steel are these Grade 8 hex bolts made from?
Material is medium carbon steel to AISI 1021 through 1045, heat treated to reach Grade 8 properties and finishing at Rockwell C33-39 hardness. That heat treatment is also why you should not weld, re-heat or hot-bend a Grade 8 bolt; doing so destroys the temper and the rated strength goes with it.
