Metallics JMHTB1045 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size and pitch is the Metallics JMHTB1045 M10 hex tap bolt?
It's an M10 bolt with a 1.5 mm thread pitch, right-hand thread, and a 45 mm length under the head. That 1.5 pitch is the standard coarse metric thread for M10, so it mates with a standard M10 coarse nut or a tapped M10 hole. If your tapped hole is M10 x 1.25 fine, this bolt will not thread in.
2) Is this M10 x 45 bolt threaded all the way to the head?
Yes. The threads run the full length of the shank right up under the hex head, which is what makes it a tap bolt rather than a partially threaded cap screw. Full threading means you can set your grip length anywhere within the 45 mm, useful when bolting a motor foot through slotted mounting holes or into a tapped base.
3) What does Grade 8.8 mean on a metric bolt, and is it strong enough for motor mounting?
Grade 8.8 is a medium carbon steel bolt, heat treated, rated here at 120,350 psi minimum tensile and 95,700 psi minimum yield, with a hardness of Rockwell C23-34. That is the common structural-duty metric class and it's why these get used to mount motors to machinery and in automotive and truck repair. For general electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work it is well above what bracket and equipment mounting requires.
4) Are these Metallics bolts Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JMHTB1045 M10 x 45 hex tap bolt is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your contract carries domestic sourcing requirements, this is not the fastener to specify.
5) Do I need a separate washer under the head of this Metallics hex tap bolt?
The head has an integral washer face beneath it, so the bolt seats flat against the work without a flat washer for load spreading. On soft or slotted material you may still want a washer to bridge the slot, but for a tapped steel hole the washer face is the bearing surface.
6) Will a zinc plated steel bolt hold up outdoors or on rooftop HVAC equipment?
These are carbon steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating is a mild corrosion barrier suited to dry indoor and sheltered use, which covers most motor mounting, panel and equipment work. For sustained wet exposure, coastal air, or chemical washdown, specify stainless or hot dip galvanized instead.
7) How are these M10 x 45 bolts packaged and what is the minimum I can buy?
They ship in a jar of 50, and 50 each is the order minimum. That jar quantity suits an MRO crib or a service truck where you're pulling a few M10s at a time rather than kitting a single job. Other sizes and quantities are available by request.
