Additional Notes
- Other sizes and quantities available by request
Features
- A Hex headed extrnally threaded fastener with washer-face beneath the head, a metric thread pitch, made from high alloy steel and heat-treated. The threads on the shank extended all of the way to directly beneath the head.
- Used in automotive and fleet industries where greater tensile strength is required that can be achieved with a class 8.8 fastener

Metallics JMHTB14401 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JMHTB14401 M14 bolt threaded all the way to the head?
Yes, it's a fully threaded tap bolt. The threads on the shank run right up to directly beneath the hex head, so there is no unthreaded grip length. That matters if you're relying on a plain shank through a clearance hole for shear alignment, pick a partially threaded hex cap screw instead. For threading into a tapped hole or clamping a stack with a nut, full thread is what you want.
2) What thread pitch does the Metallics M14 x 40 class 10.9 tap bolt use, coarse or fine?
The pitch is 1.25 mm, which is the fine pitch for M14. Standard coarse M14 is 2.0 mm, so this will not thread into a coarse-tapped M14 hole or accept a coarse M14 nut. Threading is right hand. Check the mating nut or tapped hole is M14 x 1.25 before you order the jar.
3) What is the difference between a class 10.9 bolt and a class 8.8 bolt, and when do I need 10.9?
Class 10.9 is the higher strength grade. These Metallics M14 bolts are high alloy steel, heat treated, with a minimum tensile of 150,800 psi and minimum yield of 136,300 psi, and they test Rockwell C32-39. The reason to step up from 8.8 is a joint that needs more clamp load or tensile capacity than an 8.8 fastener can carry, which is typical in automotive and fleet work. Be aware the higher grade is harder and less ductile, so torque to the correct spec rather than feel.
4) Is the zinc plating on these M14 bolts good enough for outdoor or wet locations?
The finish is zinc on a steel bolt. That's a general purpose coating for indoor, dry, or sheltered service and light moisture exposure. It is not a marine or sustained wet-location finish, and class 10.9 steel is also subject to hydrogen embrittlement concerns in aggressive environments. For permanent exterior or washdown duty, specify a hot dip galvanized or stainless fastener in the appropriate grade instead.
5) How many bolts come in a jar of Metallics JMHTB14401 and can I buy fewer?
JMHTB14401 ships as a jar of 50 pieces, and 50 each is the order minimum, so the jar is the smallest buy. The jar pack is handy on a service truck or a parts bin where you want a sealed count rather than loose bulk. Other sizes and quantities in the MHTB and JMHTB series are available by request.
6) Can I use the Metallics JMHTB14401 on a federally funded or Buy American job?
No. JMHTB14401 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and the country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project carries domestic-content requirements, this bolt will not satisfy them and you'll need a fastener with documented domestic origin.
7) Do I need a separate washer under the head of this Metallics hex tap bolt?
The bolt is made with a washer face beneath the hex head, which gives a clean bearing surface against the joint. For soft or coated materials, slotted holes, or where you need to spread load, a hardened washer is still the right call, and for a class 10.9 bolt a hardened washer is the usual pairing. Nuts and washers are not included with the jar.
