Metallics JMHTB645 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JMHTB645 threaded all the way to the head, or is there a shoulder?
Fully threaded. The JMHTB645 is a tap bolt, so the threads on the shank run right up to directly beneath the hex head, with no unthreaded grip length. That matters when you are bolting into a tapped hole or a blind hole and need thread engagement at every depth, rather than a shouldered cap screw that only engages at the bottom.
2) What size and thread does the M6 x 45 hex tap bolt use?
It is a metric M6 bolt, 45mm long under the head, with a 1.0mm thread pitch and right hand threads. Standard M6 coarse pitch is 1.0, so it mates with any M6 coarse tapped hole or M6 nut. Metric only, so it will not thread into an imperial 1/4-20 hole.
3) Is a Class 8.8 bolt strong enough to mount a motor to a machine base?
Yes, that is exactly what this one is sold for. Class 8.8 medium carbon steel, heat treated, with 120,350 psi minimum tensile and 95,700 psi minimum yield, hardness Rockwell C23-34. That is the common structural grade for motor mounts, machinery, and automotive or truck repair work. For higher clamp loads you would step up to a Class 10.9.
4) How many bolts come in a jar and can I buy fewer than that?
These ship 100 pieces in a jar, and the jar is the minimum order unit, so 100 is the smallest quantity. The filled jar weighs 1801 g. Metallics does offer other sizes and quantities in the MHTB and JMHTB series on request if 45mm or a 100 count jar is not what the job needs.
5) Can I use the Metallics JMHTB645 on a federally funded or Buy American job?
No. These hex tap bolts are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries domestic sourcing requirements, this is not the part to submit.
6) Do I need to add a flat washer under the head of this hex tap bolt?
The head has an integral washer face beneath it, so it already seats on a finished bearing surface. On soft materials, slotted holes, or painted sheet steel you would still add a flat washer to spread the load, but for a tapped steel boss the washer face is usually enough.
7) Will the zinc plating on these M6 bolts hold up outdoors?
The finish is zinc plated steel, which is a mild corrosion barrier meant for dry indoor and protected service, typical of electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning work. For sustained wet exposure, coastal air, or chemical washdown, specify hot dip galvanized or stainless instead.
8) What wrench or socket size does the hex head on this M6 tap bolt take?
Hex head, driven with a socket or open end wrench rather than a driver bit. Metallics lists the head height in the 3.85 to 4.15 range and the bolt body outside diameter as 5.82 to 6, consistent with a nominal M6 shank. Check the across flats on the first bolt out of the jar before you set up a torque wrench.
