Bolts M8 X 16 C10.9 Hx Tap Blt St-zn (Jar 100)
Features
- A Hex headed extrnally threaded fastener with washer-face beneath the head, a metric thread pitch, made from high alloy steel and heat-treated. The threads on the shank extended all of the way to directly beneath the head.
- Used in automotive and fleet industries where greater tensile strength is required that can be achieved with a class 8.8 fastener

Metallics JMHTB8161 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JMHTB8161 M8 x 16 bolt threaded all the way to the head?
Yes. The JMHTB8161 is a tap bolt, meaning the thread runs the full length of the 16mm shank right up to underneath the hex head. That matters when you are bolting through thin material or into a tapped hole where a partially threaded bolt would bottom out on the unthreaded shoulder before it clamps. Hex head with a washer face beneath it.
2) What is the thread pitch on this M8 metric tap bolt, and what nut do I need?
Pitch is 1.25mm, right hand thread, so it is standard M8 coarse. Any M8 x 1.25 nut or tapped M8 hole will take it. Nuts are not included with the bolts.
3) How strong is a class 10.9 bolt compared to a class 8.8?
Class 10.9 is the higher strength grade. These Metallics bolts are rated 150,800 psi minimum tensile and 136,300 psi minimum yield, with a hardness of Rockwell C32-39, from heat treated alloy steel. The description points to automotive and fleet work where an 8.8 fastener does not carry enough tensile strength. If your drawing calls out 8.8 you can generally use 10.9 in its place, but never the reverse.
4) Are these Metallics bolts Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The JMHTB8161 hex tap bolts are not Buy American compliant and are not ARRA compliant, and the country of origin is listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, these will not satisfy it.
5) Is an M8 x 16 hex tap bolt the same as a 5/16 inch bolt?
No, and this is the most common mix-up on metric fasteners. M8 is a metric diameter with a 1.25mm pitch and will not thread into a 5/16-18 nut or tapped hole, even though the two are close enough in size to start crossing by hand. Check the drawing or the existing hardware for metric callouts before ordering the JMHTB8161.
6) How many bolts come in a jar, and can I buy fewer than 100?
They ship in a jar of 100 pieces, and the jar is the order minimum, so 100 is the smallest quantity. Jar weight is listed at 1070 g. Metallics does make other sizes and quantities in the MHTB and JMHTB series available on request.
7) Will zinc plated steel bolts hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The JMHTB8161 is steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles indoor and sheltered conditions, which covers most electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning work these are catalogued for. For sustained exposure to weather, washdown, or coastal air, zinc plated class 10.9 is not the right choice and stainless hardware is the usual substitute. Note that stainless will not match the 150,800 psi tensile rating of a 10.9 bolt, so if the connection is structural you need to solve corrosion a different way.
8) What size wrench or socket do these M8 hex bolts take?
Standard across the trade for an M8 hex bolt is a 13mm wrench or socket, and the head width on the JMHTB8161 is listed at 13 inches at the top of its range, consistent with a 13mm across-flats head. Head height falls between 5.15 and 5.45.
