1) Can the Burndy KAU-KIT transformer lug kit be used on aluminum conductors, or copper only?
Both. The KAU-KIT series lugs take copper and aluminum stranded conductors, with the exact conductor range depending on which configuration you order (KAU-KIT1, KAU-KIT2 or KAU-KIT3). The body is high strength aluminum alloy, left unplated.
2) What do I get in a Burndy KAU-KIT kit, or do I have to buy bolts separately?
The hardware comes with it. Each KAU-KIT ships with the lugs plus the mounting hardware, including hex head bolts and captive hex nuts, so nothing extra is needed to land the lug on the transformer pad.
3) Which KAU-KIT number do I order, KAU-KIT1, KAU-KIT2 or KAU-KIT3?
Pick by the termination setup on the transformer. The series is ordered in two ways: MPN KAU-KIT-1, which covers the KAUKIT1/KAUKIT2 configuration, and MPN KAU-KIT3 for the KAUKIT3 configuration. Conductor support (copper or aluminum stranded) varies by the configuration selected, so match the kit to the conductor and pad you are terminating to.
4) Can I bury a Burndy KAU-KIT lug direct in the ground or use it in a below-grade vault splice?
No. The KAU-KIT lugs are not rated for direct burial, so keep them inside the transformer enclosure, panel or other dry, enclosed termination point. For a buried connection you need a connector specifically rated for direct burial.
5) Is the Burndy KAU-KIT UL Listed or CSA certified for a job that requires listed connectors?
It is not. The KAU-KIT series carries no UL Listed, UL Recognized, cULus or CSA marking. If your spec or inspector requires a listed termination, this kit will not satisfy it and you should specify a listed lug instead. RoHS status is exempt.
6) The KAU-KIT lugs are unplated aluminum. Does that matter for a corrosive or outdoor-pad environment?
Unplated means bare aluminum alloy, no tin or other plating on the barrel or pad face. The alloy itself is a high strength, corrosion-resistant aluminum, but with no plating you should use a suitable joint compound on the mating surfaces and keep the connection inside an enclosure, since the kit is not rated for direct burial.
7) Are these transformer lugs only for transformers, or can I use them in a panel?
Transformer terminations are the primary use, but the same lugs are used for electrical panel installations, industrial power distribution, commercial electrical systems and utility connection work. Anywhere you need a mechanical aluminum-body lug on a bolted pad and the connection is enclosed.
