1) Can I splice aluminum to copper with a Burndy HYLINK compression splice?
Yes. The HYLINK splice is rated for aluminum-to-aluminum, aluminum-to-copper, and copper-to-copper conductor combinations, which is what makes it useful on retrofit work where an older aluminum feeder meets new copper. The barrel is wrought aluminum with an electro-tin plated finish and comes prefilled with PENETROX oxide inhibitor, so the dissimilar-metal joint is protected without you brushing and buttering the conductor on site.
2) Is the Burndy HYLINK splice rated for medium-voltage 15kV or 35kV cable?
Rated to 35 kV maximum, with a 600V minimum. That covers 5kV, 15kV, 25kV and 35kV class distribution cable as well as 600V building feeders, which is why it shows up in substation, transformer and underground distribution splicing. Temperature rating is 194 degrees F.
3) Is the Burndy HYLINK compression splice UL Listed for an inspected job?

4) Do I need to apply oxide inhibitor before crimping a Burndy HYLINK aluminum splice?
No, the barrel arrives prefilled with PENETROX oxide inhibitor and capped at both ends. The end caps are color coded red and white for wire-size identification and they keep dirt and moisture out of the compound until you strip them off at the pole or in the manhole. Pull the caps, insert the conductor to the solid center stop, and crimp.
5) Should I use a compression splice or a mechanical set-screw connector for a direct-buried aluminum feeder?
A compression splice like the Burndy HYLINK is the one to use where the joint has to be permanent, submersible, or medium voltage. It is crimped to a fixed die index so the connection cannot loosen or back off the way a set screw can under thermal cycling, and the tin plating plus factory PENETROX fill handles the corrosion exposure of a buried or manhole location. A mechanical connector is the better choice when you need to be able to open the joint again for testing or future taps. Note the HYLINK is a straight splice, conductor to conductor, not a tap or a tee.
6) Will the Burndy HYLINK splice hold up in a wet manhole or coastal outdoor location?
The wrought aluminum body is electro-tin plated for corrosion resistance, and the prefilled oxide inhibitor seals the conductor interface against the moisture that drives aluminum oxidation. That combination is what makes it standard on underground and overhead distribution splicing and on substation and transformer connections. Service temperature is rated to 194 degrees F.
7) Is Burndy HYLINK the same thing as a Burndy YS splice?
