Burndy Non-Insulated Tin-Plated Copper Terminal Lug

The Burndy Non-Insulated Tin-Plated Copper Terminal Lug, marketed under Burndy's HYLUG™ trade name, is a compression-style terminal connector designed for stranded copper (CU) conductors. Built with a straight tongue and a tin-plated copper body, this terminal is rated for a minimum voltage of 600V with a 35 kV rating class, making it suitable for demanding electrical distribution applications. Both UL Listed and CSA Approved, this terminal lug delivers dependable, code-compliant termination performance for copper conductor systems.

Key Features

  • Durable Construction: Copper body construction provides excellent conductivity and long-term reliability for termination applications.
  • Finish: Tin-plated surface helps resist corrosion and supports a stable, long-lasting electrical connection.
  • Connector Type: Terminal-style connector configured for CU C Str (stranded copper) conductors.
  • Tongue Angle: Straight tongue design for standard in-line termination layouts.
  • Voltage Rating: Rated for a minimum voltage of 600V with a 35 kV rating class, supporting a broad range of distribution voltages up to 35,000V maximum.
  • Non-Insulated Design: Non-insulated terminal body allows for application-specific insulation or heat-shrink coverage as required by the installation.
  • Trade Name: Part of Burndy's HYLUG™ line of terminal connectors.

Burndy YA8C-TC14 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a Burndy HYLUG terminal lug on aluminum wire?
No. The Burndy HYLUG non-insulated terminal lugs are built for stranded copper conductors only, with a copper body and copper conductor rating. Terminating aluminum in a copper-only lug is not a code-compliant connection, so for aluminum runs you need a lug rated AL or a dual-rated AL9CU connector instead.
2) What wire sizes do these Burndy HYLUG copper compression lugs come in?
Wire size choices run 8 AWG, 6 AWG, 4 AWG, 3 AWG, 2 AWG, 1 AWG, 2/0 AWG and 3/0 AWG. Order by the conductor you are terminating, not by the barrel that looks close: a compression lug only forms a proper crimp on the exact AWG it is die-rated for.
3) Can these copper lugs be used on medium-voltage gear, or are they 600V only?
They carry a 600V minimum rating and a 35 kV rating class, with a 35,000V maximum. That covers ordinary 600V panelboard and switchgear work plus medium-voltage substation and distribution terminations up to 35 kV.
4) Are these compression lugs or set-screw (mechanical) lugs?
Compression. The HYLUG barrel is crimped onto the conductor with a die-rated hydraulic or battery tool, which gives a permanent termination with no set screw to re-torque. If you need something you can install with a hex key and revisit later, a mechanical set-screw lug is the different tool for that job.
5) Are Burndy HYLUG terminal lugs approved for use in Canada as well as the US?
Both. The HYLUG copper terminal lugs are UL Listed and CSA Approved, so they satisfy inspection on either side of the border. They are not ETL certified and are not UL Recognized components; the listing is a full UL Listing.
6) Do these Burndy lugs come with insulation, or do I need to add heat shrink?
The barrel is non-insulated bare tin-plated copper, so any covering is on you. On medium-voltage terminations that normally means heat shrink or tape applied over the barrel after crimping; at 600V in a panel or switchgear enclosure the bare lug is typically left as-is.
7) Why choose a tin-plated lug instead of bare copper?
The tin plating on the copper body slows corrosion at the pad and keeps contact resistance stable over time, which matters in damp, outdoor, or industrial atmospheres and where the lug bolts to a plated bus. Electrically it is still a solid copper conductor path.
8) Can I buy a single Burndy HYLUG lug, or do they only ship in boxes?
Minimum order quantity is 1, so you can pick up a single lug for a one-off termination rather than committing to a full box.
9) Where can I get the Burndy HYLUG spec sheet for a submittal package?
Burndy publishes a PDF spec sheet for the HYLUG terminal lugs, linked in the product details, which is what you would attach to a submittal alongside the UL Listed and CSA Approved statements.
