1) Can the Burndy YA4CA1 lug be used on copper wire, or is it aluminum only?
It is dual rated. The YA-A Series HYLUG accepts #4 AWG stranded aluminum or #4 AWG stranded copper, so the same lug works on either conductor. The body itself is wrought aluminum with electro-tin plating, which is what lets it land on copper without a separate part number.
2) What die index and crimp tooling does this Burndy #4 compression terminal need?
Die Index 375, marked on the lug along with a green color-coded end cap so the crew can confirm the right die before crimping. Strip the conductor back 7/8 inch and seat it fully in the barrel. Any Burndy-compatible compression tool carrying the 375 die will make the connection.
3) Will this lug bolt to a 1/4 inch stud on my breaker or bus bar?
Yes. The pad is drilled for a 1/4 inch stud, with an actual hole size of 0.28 inch (7 mm) and a pad width of 0.47 inch. One hole, straight standard tongue. If your equipment has two studs on center or a larger bolt, this is the wrong lug.
4) Is the Burndy YA-A terminal rated for medium voltage work, or just 600V panels?
It covers both. The rating runs 600 V through 35 kV, with a 90 C (194 F) conductor temperature rating, so it is usable in a 600 V panel, in switchgear, or on shielded medium voltage cable terminations up to 35 kV.
5) Is the Burndy YA4CA1 UL Listed, and does it carry CSA?
UL Listed, built to UL486B 90 C requirements and meeting UL468A-468B. It is not CSA approved, not ETL, not cULus, and not a UL Recognized component, so on a Canadian job specifying CSA you will need a different part.
6) Will this Burndy lug work on #4 solid or on #2 wire?
No. The YA4CA1 is sized for #4 AWG stranded only, aluminum or copper. Crimping a #2 conductor will not fit the barrel, and a smaller conductor in this barrel will not hold the compression the 375 die produces. Order the lug matched to the exact AWG you are landing.
7) Do I need to add oxide inhibitor before crimping this aluminum lug?
No. The barrel comes factory prefilled with PENETROX oxide-inhibiting compound, which is what keeps the aluminum oxide layer broken and the joint airtight. The barrel is closed and chamfered with an internal bevel so the strands feed in without pushing the compound out.
8) How much room do I need in the enclosure for this #4 compression lug?
Overall length is 2.13 inches (54 mm), barrel length 0.88 inch, barrel outside diameter 0.43 inch, and pad-to-hole center dimension Z of 0.42 inch. In a tight gutter or termination cabinet those numbers tell you whether the lug clears the barrier and whether the cable bend lands on the stud.
9) Is this an insulated lug or bare?
Bare. The YA-A HYLUG is an uninsulated compression terminal with a closed barrel and a tin-plated aluminum body, so if the termination needs covering you supply heat shrink or a boot separately.
