1) Will the Burndy YAV27LTC lug take 3/0 DLO cable, or only standard stranded 3/0?
Both. The YAV27LTC is sized for 3/0 AWG stranded copper and also accepts 3/0 (450/#24) DLO cable, plus 3/0 AWG Flex H, I, K and M constructions. That is why it's designated for flexible conductors. It also takes 150 (61) Navy stranded copper. If your cable is one of those constructions in 3/0, the barrel is the right size.
2) Which die do I set my crimper to for this Burndy 3/0 compression lug?
Die index 14, color coded orange. Match the orange 14 die in your Burndy-compatible hydraulic or battery crimp tool and make the number of crimps the tool calls for. Using any other index will either under-compress the barrel or overwork it, and the inspection window lets you confirm the conductor bottomed out before you crimp.
3) Is the YAV27LTC available for a 3/8 inch stud as well as 1/2 inch?
Yes, two stud sizes are offered: YAV27LTC12FX for a 1/2 inch stud and YAV27LTC38FX for a 3/8 inch stud. Pick by the bolt or busbar stud already in the equipment. On the 1/2 inch version the pad hole measures 0.53 inch and the pad is 1.03 inch wide, so confirm you have that much landing room on the bus or breaker terminal.
4) How much insulation do I strip back before crimping this lug?
Strip 1 inch. The barrel length is 1.00 inch, and the stated strip length for this HYLUG terminal is 1 inch, so the conductor should bottom out in the barrel with the jacket right up against it. The internal chamfer helps guide strands in without birdcaging.
5) Can I use this Burndy lug on a medium-voltage termination, or is it 600V only?
It is rated up to 35 kV, with a minimum voltage rating of 600V, and the UL/CSA listing covers 90 degree C operation. So it is suitable for MV terminations up to 35 kV as well as ordinary 600V power and control work.
6) Copper lug on aluminum bus, or aluminum conductor - is this the right part?
No on the conductor side. This is a copper-bodied lug sized for copper conductors only, tin plated. Aluminum conductors need an aluminum or bimetallic AL9CU-rated lug instead. The tin plating does make it suitable for bolting to aluminum or copper bus, since it keeps a bare copper pad from sitting directly against aluminum.
7) Will this lug fit through a 3/4 inch conduit entry or tight cable boot?
The barrel outside diameter is 0.70 inch and overall length is 66 mm, with a 1.03 inch pad. That barrel OD is the number that decides whether a heat-shrink boot or tight raceway entry will pass over the crimped lug, so size your boot to 0.70 inch minimum.
8) Is this a mechanical set-screw lug or does it need a crimp tool?
Compression only. It is a standard-barrel crimp lug with no set screws, so a hydraulic or battery crimper with the correct die is required. If you have no crimp tooling on site, a mechanical set-screw lug for 3/0 is the alternative, but it will not carry this 35 kV rating.
9) Do these Burndy terminal lugs come in bags or can I buy one?
Minimum pack quantity is 1, so single pieces are orderable rather than a fixed 10 or 25 pack. Useful when you only need to replace a couple of terminations on a motor lead or a switchgear connection.
