1) Can I use a standard 300A time-delay fuse instead of the Bussmann FWX-300A in a drive?
No. The FWX-300A is a high speed semiconductor fuse, built to clear fault current fast enough to limit let-through energy to SCRs, diodes and power transistors. A conventional time-delay or dual-element fuse of the same 300A rating clears far too slowly and the semiconductor fails before the fuse does. If the equipment drawing calls for a semiconductor-rated fuse, use one.
2) What voltage circuit is the Bussmann FWX-300A rated for?
250V. It is a 250 volt, 300 amp semiconductor fuse, so it suits power electronics and industrial control circuits at or below 250V. On a 480V rectifier or drive bus it is the wrong part, a fuse must be rated at or above the circuit voltage, so look to a higher voltage member of the Bussmann FWH or FWP high speed families instead.
3) What does a semiconductor fuse actually protect in a VFD or rectifier assembly?
It protects the silicon, not the wire. The FWX-300A sits ahead of or in series with the power devices in a variable frequency drive, rectifier bridge or other power conversion assembly and clears a shorted SCR or diode fast enough to keep the fault from cascading through the stack. Branch circuit and cable protection is a separate fuse or breaker, a semiconductor fuse does not replace it.
