Bussmann JJN-225 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a Bussmann JJN fuse be used on a 480V circuit?
No. The JJN series is a 300 Vac / 160 Vdc fuse, so it must not be applied on a 480V system. For 480V you need the 600 Vac Class T fuse instead (Bussmann's JJS series). Using a 300V fuse above its rating is an interrupting-rating violation, not just a derating issue.
2) Is the JJN fuse suitable for protecting a variable frequency drive?
Yes, that is its intended application. The JJN is a current-limiting very fast acting fuse for VFD line protection, which is what semiconductor and drive front ends need: it clears fast enough to hold let-through energy below what the drive's rectifier can take. Confirm your drive's input voltage is within 300 Vac.
3) What is the interrupting rating of the Bussmann JJN, and is it enough for a high available fault current service?
200,000 A interrupting at 300 Vac, with 20 kAIC at 160 Vdc. That covers essentially any available fault current you will see on a 240V or 208V commercial service, so the fuse itself will not be the limiting element in your short-circuit current rating calculation.
4) How does a Class T fuse mount, and will it fit my existing Class J or Class R fuse block?
No, it will not. Class T fuses use bolted blade ends on both ends and bolt down to a Class T block or directly to bus; Class J and Class R are ferrule or knife-blade clip-mounted and the dimensions are not interchangeable. The JJN-500 body measures 3.06 x 1.25 x 1.25 inches, which is why Class T is chosen where panel space is tight. Order a Class T fuse block sized to the amp rating.
5) What amp ratings does the Bussmann JJN Class T fuse come in?
Four ratings are offered: 50 A (JJN-50), 225 A (JJN-225), 300 A (JJN-300) and 500 A (JJN-500). All share the same 300 Vac / 160 Vdc rating and Class T body style, so you pick purely on the amperage your feeder or drive input requires.
6) Is a very fast acting Class T fuse the right choice for a motor circuit, or should I use a time-delay fuse?
For a straight across-the-line motor with inrush, a very fast acting fuse like the JJN will likely open on starting current; a time-delay Class RK5 or Class J dual-element fuse is the usual pick there. The JJN's value is where fast clearing protects semiconductors, so VFD and rectifier line protection, feeders and panel mains, not direct motor starting duty.
7) Does the Bussmann JJN have a blown-fuse indicator?
No. The JJN is non-indicating, so there is no pop-up pin or window to show it has opened. In a drive panel where quick troubleshooting matters, plan on metering across the fuse or adding a separate blown-fuse indicating relay.
8) Are Bussmann JJN fuses sold individually or in boxes?
Packaging is standard and the JJN-500 is described as a quantity of 1, so you are buying single fuses. On a three-phase circuit remember you need three, and replace all three together after a fault so the set stays matched.
9) Are these genuine Eaton Bussmann fuses and do they carry CE marking?
These are genuine Eaton Bussmann series parts ordered by the factory number, for example JJN-500, and the series is CE Marked. That matters on export-bound equipment and on panels built to a European customer's spec.
