1) Will a Bussmann JKS fuse fit my existing Class J fuse block?
Yes, if the block is Class J and sized for the amp rating you order. Class J is a dimensional standard, so the JKS body length and diameter match any Class J holder or block of the same ampere group. The JKS uses ferrule end x ferrule end caps on both ends, which is the standard clip-style termination for 25A through 60A Class J holders. It will not drop into a Class R, Class T, or Class L holder, those are different dimensions and rejection features.
2) Can I use a 700V JKS fuse on a 480V or 240V circuit?
Yes. The JKS is rated 700V, and a fuse may be applied at or below its voltage rating, so it works on 600V, 480V, 240V and 208V systems. What you cannot do is go the other way, nothing above 700V. The interrupting rating is 200 kAIC at 700 Vac, which covers high available fault current services where a lower AIC fuse would not be acceptable.
3) Is the JKS fast-acting or time-delay? Will it hold a motor inrush?
Fast-acting, single element. It has no time delay, so it will nuisance-open on motor starting inrush or transformer magnetizing current. Use the JKS where the load has little or no inrush: panelboard feeders, machinery disconnects, resistive loads, and circuits feeding solid state equipment that needs the let-through energy held down. For a motor branch circuit you want a dual-element time-delay Class J instead, such as Bussmann's LPJ-SP series.

5) Can I tell by looking whether a JKS fuse has blown?
No. The JKS is a non-indicating fuse, there is no pop-up pin or window to show an open element. You test it with a meter, out of the holder or across the terminals with the circuit dead. If your maintenance crew relies on a visual check across a panel, specify an indicating Class J fuse or fit the holder with a blown-fuse indicator instead.
6) Why choose Class J over Class RK5 or RK1 fuses in a panelboard?
Class J bodies are physically smaller than Class R for the same ampere rating, so they fit tighter panel and disconnect enclosures, and the class carries a higher current-limiting performance requirement than RK5. Class J holders also reject Class R and Class H fuses, which stops someone from replacing your current-limiting fuse with a lower performing one later. The tradeoff: Class J and Class R blocks are not interchangeable, so switching classes means changing the fuse block, not just the fuse.
7) Does a current-limiting fuse actually protect my downstream equipment, or just the wire?
Both. Because the JKS is current-limiting and fast-acting, it clears a high fault well before the first half cycle peaks, so the peak let-through current and I2t energy reaching the load are far below what the system could otherwise deliver. That is what lets a starter, contactor or busway sit on a service with heavy available fault current.
