Bussmann LPS-RK-45SP – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What amp ratings does the Bussmann LPS-RK Low-Peak fuse come in?
Seven ratings: 45A, 90A, 100A, 175A, 225A, 300A and 450A, ordered as LPS-RK-45SP through LPS-RK-450SP. The SP suffix is the single-pack designation on the Low-Peak part number. Size the amp rating to the motor full load current and the protection required by your calculation, not to the holder size.
2) Will a Class RK1 fuse fit my existing Class R fuse block?
Yes, if the block is a Class R block. RK1 and RK5 share the same case dimensions and the same rejection feature, so an LPS-RK drops into any Class R rejection holder. The reverse is not true: a Class R fuse will not fit a non-rejection Class H or K block. On the larger ratings here the ends are blade type rather than ferrule, so the holder must be a bolt-in or blade-clip style.
3) Should I use an RK1 fuse or an RK5 for motor protection?
Both are dual-element time-delay and both will ride through motor inrush. The difference is let-through energy: RK1 is the more current-limiting of the two, so it drops peak let-through current and I2t further and gives you better downstream component protection and a lower arc flash incident energy. Choose RK1 where you are relying on the fuse for series ratings or equipment protection; RK5 is the economy choice when only overcurrent protection is required. The LPS-RK is the RK1.
4) Why does a motor circuit need a dual-element time-delay fuse instead of a fast-acting one?
A motor pulls six or more times its running current for a few seconds on start. The LPS-RK uses two elements: the thermal overload element tolerates that starting surge without opening, while the short-circuit element clears a bolted fault in a fraction of a cycle. A fast-acting fuse sized to the motor's full load current would nuisance-open on every start, and one sized up to survive the start would no longer give close overload protection.
5) Does the LPS-RK have a blown fuse indicator?
No. The LPS-RK is non-indicating, so there is no pop-out pin or window to tell you it has opened. On a panel where you want visual or remote fault indication you will need an external blown-fuse monitoring relay or indicating fuse holder, or you test with a meter during troubleshooting.
6) Can I use these Low-Peak fuses on transformer primary protection?
Yes, that is one of the main uses for a dual-element Low-Peak. Transformers draw a heavy magnetizing inrush when energized, and the time-delay element lets that pass without opening while still holding the primary within NEC overcurrent limits. The same characteristic is why the series is used on HID and LED lighting circuits, chillers and air handlers, where inrush is high but the running load is modest.
