Callan KA3001 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Callan Brayden knob and deadbolt combo fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or does it need a 1-3/4?
Both. The Brayden combo set covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, which takes in older interior slabs and standard 1-3/4 inch exterior doors. Both halves, knob and deadbolt, carry the same range, so you are not mixing a thick-door deadbolt with a thin-door knob on the same leaf.
2) Will the Callan Brayden combo drop into the holes already bored in my door?
If the door is bored to the standard residential prep, yes. The Brayden uses a 2-1/8 inch cross bore and a 1 inch edge bore at both the knob and the deadbolt, and the latch backset adjusts between 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches, so it lands on either of the two common backsets without re-drilling. Deadbolt rose diameter is 2-1/2 inches, so measure your existing deadbolt trim if you are covering an old escutcheon mark.
3) Can the Callan Brayden entry knobset be keyed alike with the rest of my building?
Keying is an order option on the Brayden combo. Pick KW1 5-pin or SC1 5-pin for the keyway, then choose keyed different or keyed alike. If you already run Kwikset-style KW1 keys across a property, order KW1 keyed alike and reference your existing key; if the property is on Schlage-style keys, order SC1. The knob and the deadbolt on the set share the same cylinder spec, so one key runs both.
4) Do I have to order a left hand or right hand version of the Callan Brayden?
No handing to specify. The Brayden is fully reversible for left or right hand doors, and it is set up for one person to install, so a property manager doing several units in a day is not sorting hands off a list. One part number covers both swings.
5) Will the Callan Brayden latch catch in my existing strike plate?
The knob latch has a 1/2 inch throw with a round corner faceplate, and the deadbolt projects 15/16 inch. If the door currently wears a round corner latch face, the new one drops into the same mortise. Square corner prep means you will need to square off the pocket or file the corners. Check that your deadbolt strike box is deep enough to take the full 15/16 inch, since a shallow pocket is the usual reason a bolt will not throw all the way.
6) The Brayden is Grade 3 and my opening is a commercial entrance that sees heavy traffic. What should I use instead?
Step up to a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical knob. The BEST 8K Series is an entrance function single cylinder Grade 1 heavy duty knob lock, and the Corbin Russwin CK4851 is an entrance/office cylindrical lock with a Global knob and conventional cylinder, Grade 1, covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Callan Brayden meets BHMA Grade 3 requirements and is catalogued for residential use, so a Grade 1 lock is the one that matches a heavy commercial traffic count.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the Callan Brayden combo knobset with deadbolt from another brand?
The Schlage Residential F500 Plymouth with Georgian knob is the nearest match in the same shape: it is a combo function set with adjustable backsets and dual strikes, covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Callan Brayden combo is also an entrance knob paired with a deadbolt, with adjustable 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset on both the knob and the deadbolt, and the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. Both give you a knob and deadbolt keyed as one package rather than two separately ordered pieces.
8) My door is 2 inches thick. Will the Callan Brayden work, or do I need something else?
The Callan Brayden knob and deadbolt are both built for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. For a 2 inch door, the Corbin Russwin CK4851 entrance/office cylindrical lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Deltana 6171 Round Knob and Deltana 3381 Egg Knob entry sets also cover 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Falcon X101 goes to 2-1/4 inch, though it is a passage function set with no key.
9) If I only need a keyed knob and already have a deadbolt on the door, what should I order instead of the Brayden combo?
Order a keyed entrance knob on its own. The Cal-Royal BER00 is an entrance/office Grade 3 knob lock with a Kwikset keyway for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Kwikset 400P-CP Polo is a Grade 3 keyed entry knob with a round corner adjustable latch and round corner strike over the same door thickness range. The Delaney Belton and Delaney Galway are also Grade 3 entrance knobsets. The Brayden is built as a knob plus deadbolt package, so if the deadbolt in the door is staying, a single keyed knob covers the opening.
10) I ordered the Brayden for a bedroom door and it needs a key. What is the right knob for interior rooms?
For a bedroom or bathroom you want privacy function, and for a hall or closet you want passage. The Pamex FTF Baron comes in a Grade 3 privacy version and a Grade 3 passage version, both for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Cal-Royal BER20 is a Grade 3 privacy knob lock with brass trim over the same door range. The Callan Brayden is a keyed entrance set with a deadbolt, which is exterior door hardware, not interior room hardware.
11) I am keying a building to Schlage SC1 rather than Kwikset. Does the Brayden fit that, or do I need a different lock?
The Callan Brayden is ordered with either a KW1 5-pin standard keyway or an SC1 5-pin keyway, so an SC1 building key system is covered without changing product. By contrast the Cal-Royal BER00 entrance/office Grade 3 knob lock is built around a Kwikset keyway. Both the Brayden knob and its deadbolt use a 5 pin cylinder, so the pair keys together.
12) How does the Callan Brayden keyed entry knob actually lock and unlock?
Keyed entry function: key from the outside, turn button on the inside knob. Push or turn the button and the outside knob stays locked until it is keyed or the button is released from inside. The deadbolt in the set is single cylinder, so it is key outside and thumbturn inside. That combination is the normal front-door arrangement, latch for everyday use and deadbolt for the real security.
13) I need matching knobs on the bedroom and closet doors, not a keyed entry. What do I order?
The Brayden set is keyed entry with a deadbolt, so it is the wrong function for interior doors. For those openings you want privacy (push button, no key) on bed and bath, and passage (no lock at all) on halls and closets. Pamex offers a Grade 3 Baron knob in privacy and in passage, and Cal-Royal's BER20 is a Grade 3 privacy knob, all over the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door range. Note those are different families, so the knob shape will not match the Brayden exactly.
14) Does the Callan Brayden come with everything, or do I need to buy the deadbolt separately?
It is a combo set: keyed entry knob and single cylinder deadbolt together, both with round corner latch faceplates and both keyed to the same cylinder spec. What you specify at order is the keyway (KW1 or SC1) and whether the units are keyed alike or keyed different. The backset adjusts in the field, so there is no separate 2-3/8 versus 2-3/4 part to choose.
15) What is a Grade 3 alternative to the Callan Brayden if I want a different knob style at the same grade?
Several Grade 3 keyed knobs sit at the same grade as the Callan Brayden. The Pamex FTF Baron is a Grade 3 knob lockset in entrance/office function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the Master Lock BC Series is a Grade 3 biscuit knob keyed entry lock, and the Delaney Olivia is a Grade 3 entrance knobset. The Brayden itself is a Grade 3 entrance set, so these differ by knob shape and keyway rather than by grade. Note the Brayden ships as a knob plus deadbolt package while those are knob-only sets.
16) Is a dummy knob a substitute for the Callan Brayden entrance set?
No. A dummy knob is a fixed pull with no latch and no cylinder. The Schlage A170 single dummy trim, the BEST 6K Series single dummy trim, and the Bravura Biloxi are all dummy function knobs, meant for a door leaf that does not latch. The Callan Brayden is a keyed entrance set that operates a latch and a deadbolt with a 5 pin cylinder, so a dummy will not secure or even hold the door closed.
17) What do I use if the door needs to stay locked from outside at all times but always exit freely, instead of an entrance knob?
That is storeroom function, not entrance function. The Sargent 6G04 is a Grade 2 storeroom/closet knob lock with a single cylinder, and the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet single cylinder knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Callan Brayden is entrance function: it locks from the exterior with a key and locks or unlocks from the inside with a turn button, so the outside knob can be left unlocked, which is what a storeroom opening is trying to prevent.
18) Can I put the Callan Brayden on a classroom door?
Classroom openings use classroom function, which the Dexter C2000 Series covers as a Grade 2 classroom cylindrical ball knob lock, non-clutching and keyed, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Callan Brayden is entrance function with an inside turn button, which is the opposite of what a classroom lock is specified to do. The Brayden is also a Grade 3 residential set, while the Dexter classroom knob is Grade 2.
19) Is there a keyless option instead of the Brayden keyed knob for a door where I do not want to hand out keys?
The Lockey 3830 is a mechanical keyless combination knob lock with an auto-locking passage function, for doors 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch. It opens on a code rather than a key. The Callan Brayden takes a 5 pin cylinder in KW1 or SC1 and can be ordered keyed alike or keyed different, so the choice is between managing a key system and managing a combination.
20) The Kwikset 400P is a keyed entry knob too. How does it differ from the Callan Brayden?
The Kwikset 400P Polo is an entrance function keyed entry knob supplied with a 6AL latch and RCS strike, and the 400P-CP version is Grade 3 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Callan Brayden is also a Grade 3 entrance set at the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door range, but it comes as a knob and deadbolt together with adjustable 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backsets on both pieces and a 5 pin cylinder in KW1 or SC1. If the opening already has its deadbolt, the knob-only Kwikset covers it; if the deadbolt is being replaced at the same time, the Brayden handles both on one key.
21) My opening needs a fire rated knob lock. Is the Brayden the right pick?
For a fire rated opening, the Falcon W101 is a Grade 2 cylindrical knob lock with a fire rating and a 2-3/4 inch backset in passage/closet latch function, and the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage knobset with an interchangeable core and a fire rating for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The Callan Brayden is a Grade 3 residential entrance set, so on a labeled opening specify from the fire rated Falcon sets.
22) How far does the Callan Brayden knob stick out from the door face?
Knob projection is 2-3/8 inches. That matters where a door swings back against a wall, a cabinet, or a second door in a tight entry, and where a storm or screen door closes close behind. Measure the clearance before ordering if the door opens into a narrow vestibule.
23) What finishes does the Callan Brayden combo knobset come in?
Two: US15 satin nickel and US3 bright brass. Satin nickel is the one that blends with most current builder hardware, bright brass with older brass-trimmed doors. Finish carries across the knob and the deadbolt in the set, so the pair matches on the door without hunting for a separate bolt.
24) What is the Callan Brayden made of and will it hold up outside?
Zinc, on both the knob and the deadbolt. Zinc die cast is standard construction for residential-grade entry hardware and is what you would expect at Grade 3. If you want solid brass for a coastal or heavily exposed opening, the Deltana 6901 Portland entry knob and the Omnia 434/PA are solid brass builds.
25) I want a solid brass knob rather than zinc. What are my options next to the Callan Brayden?
The Omnia 434/PA is a traditional egg-shaped knob latchset in solid brass with a 3 inch projection, and the Omnia 458/0 is a single dummy knob latchset in solid brass with a 2-3/8 inch backset. The Callan Brayden knob and deadbolt are made of zinc and come in US15 Satin Nickel and US3 Bright Brass. Note the Omnia sets named here are passage and dummy function, so they do not key.
