Callan Fairfield - Grade 3 Dummy Knob

A dummy knob is a pull only. There's no latch and no moving spindle, so it mounts to the face of the door and gives you something to grab. The Fairfield dummy is what you put on the inactive leaf of a French or double door, on a closet door held by a ball or roller catch, or on a surface-mounted door where the knob just has to match the working hardware elsewhere in the room. If you need the door to actually stay shut on a latch, you want a passage set instead, not this.

Grade 3 is the residential tier under BHMA, and the Fairfield is built and catalogued as residential. For unit interiors, closets and bedroom doors in multi-family it's the normal spec. For a corridor door, an office, a school or any opening that gets cycled hard all day, step up: the Schlage A170 single dummy trim is Grade 2 heavy duty, and the BEST 6K single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty. On a dummy the grade matters less than on a latching lock, since nothing mechanical is being worked, but the finish and the fastening still have to survive the traffic.

Order by the leaf. The Fairfield dummy is a knobset for one side of one door, so a French door pair usually takes two, one on each inactive face, and sometimes two per leaf if the back side is visible. In Grade 3 residential, the Pamex FTF Baron comes in both passage and privacy for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and Cal-Royal's BER20 is a Grade 3 privacy knob over the same thickness range.

The Schlage A170 single dummy trim is the nearest straight equivalent - it is a cylindrical non-keyed knob lock in dummy function, the same function as the Callan Fairfield dummy knob, and Schlage rates the A170 Grade 2 and heavy duty for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch thick. The Callan Fairfield is a Grade 3 dummy knob in zinc with fully reversible handing. Both are pull-only trim with no latch, so either can serve on an inactive leaf or a closet door where the door does not need to latch.

Two straight swaps by function. Schlage's A170 single dummy trim is Grade 2, heavy duty, and rated for 1-3/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors, which covers a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door. BEST's 6K Series single dummy trim is Grade 2, medium duty. Cal-Royal's BA40 Barrington dummy is another cylindrical dummy knob and fits 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. All three are dummy function like the Fairfield, so the appearance and the mounting logic carry over; what changes is the grade and duty level.

For thick doors, the peers written to that range are the Corbin Russwin CK4310 Grade 1 passage/closet knob at 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, the Corbin Russwin CK4851 entrance/office knob at 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Deltana 6171 round knob entry and 3381 egg knob entry, both 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Falcon X101 Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset with interchangeable core goes to 2-1/4 inch. Those are the ones to spec when the door exceeds standard thickness.

A dummy will not secure a storeroom.
