Callan KS1001 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) My door is already bored for a knob. Will the Callan Saxon drop into the existing holes?
If the door has the standard residential prep, yes. The Saxon knobset uses a 2-1/8 inch cross bore with a 1 inch edge bore, and the latch adjusts between a 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backset, so it covers both of the usual backsets without ordering a different latch. Measure from the door edge to the center of the big hole: 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 and you are set.
2) Can I key the Callan Saxon to my existing Kwikset or Schlage keys?
The Saxon keyed entry knobset ships with a 5-pin cylinder and you pick the keyway at order: KW1 5-pin standard, or SC1 5-pin. KW1 is the Kwikset keyway, SC1 the Schlage keyway, so match whichever your building already runs. Keying is also a required choice, keyed different or keyed alike, so a set of units can all run on one key if you want the whole unit or floor on a single key.
3) Will the Callan Saxon latch into the strike plate already in my frame?
The Saxon comes with a 1/2 inch throw latch on a round corner faceplate, which is the standard residential latch and throw, so it will engage a strike already set for a typical bored knob lock. Round corner faceplate means the door edge mortise needs radiused corners; if your existing latch has a square faceplate, you will need to square or round the mortise to suit.
4) Is the Callan Saxon knobset good enough for an apartment building or a commercial office door?
It is a Grade 3 residential lockset in zinc, which suits single family, rental units, and light interior traffic. For a commercial office or high traffic opening, step up: the BEST 8K Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty entrance knob lock, and the Corbin Russwin CK4851 is an entrance/office cylindrical lock listed Grade 1 for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. In multifamily where the door sees moderate use, a Grade 2 like the Dexter C2000 entry/office knob is the middle step.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Callan Saxon keyed entry knobset from another brand?
The Callan Saxon is a Grade 3 entrance knobset that fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Cal-Royal BER00 is an entrance/office Grade 3 knob lock with a Kwikset keyway covering the same 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range, and the Pamex FTF Baron is a Grade 3 entrance/office knob lockset over that same range. The Kwikset 400P-CP Polo keyed entry knob is also Grade 3 entrance function for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors and ships with a round corner adjustable latch and round corner strike, matching the Saxon's round corner latch faceplate. Any of the three lands in the same prep as the Saxon.
6) I need a fire rated knob lock. Does the Callan Saxon work?
The Callan Saxon is a Grade 3 residential entrance knobset. Where the opening calls for a fire rated cylindrical knob, the Falcon W101 is a Grade 2 medium duty passage/closet knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset that carries a fire rating, and the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset with an interchangeable core, also fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Both are passage function, so a fire rated opening that also needs to key will point you to a Grade 1 keyed set such as the BEST 8K Series entrance lock.
7) The Callan Saxon comes with a KW1 keyway. What keyed entry knob works if the building is keyed on a Schlage keyway?
The Callan Saxon entrance knobset is offered with a KW1 5-pin or SC1 5-pin cylinder, so an SC1 Saxon keys into a Schlage-keyed system directly. If you would rather stay with a different make, the Dexter C2000 Series is a Grade 2 entry/office cylindrical ball knob lock, keyed and non-clutching, for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin CK4851 is an entrance/office cylindrical lock with a conventional cylinder for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Both take a conventional cylinder that can be keyed to the system in place.
8) Is a Grade 3 entrance knob enough for a commercial corridor, or should I step up?
The Callan Saxon is a Grade 3 entrance knobset built for residential use. For higher-traffic openings the same knob format is available at higher grades: the BEST 8K Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty entrance function single cylinder knob lock, and the Corbin Russwin CK4851 is an entrance/office cylindrical lock rated Grade 1 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. If the opening needs a keyed storeroom function rather than entrance, the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet single cylinder knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset.
9) I need the same Saxon look on a bedroom and a hall door that do not take a key. What do I use?
The Callan Saxon is keyed entry only, locked from outside with a key and from inside with a turn-button. For the non-keyed openings in the same job, the Pamex FTF Baron Grade 3 knob lockset comes in a privacy function and a passage function, both for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and Cal-Royal offers the BER20 Grade 3 privacy knob lock with brass trim over the same thickness range. The Dexter C2000 Series also splits into privacy and passage Grade 2 ball knob locks for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, so a single knob shape can run the whole unit.
10) The Callan Saxon does not fit a 2 inch thick door. What keyed knob does?
The Callan Saxon covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. For a thicker slab, the Deltana 3381 Egg Knob and the Deltana 6171 Round Knob are entry-function knobsets rated 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Corbin Russwin CK4851 entrance/office cylindrical lock with a conventional cylinder also covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Falcon X101 goes further at 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, but it is a passage knobset and takes no key.
11) The opening needs to stay locked from outside at all times with free egress. Does the Callan Saxon do that?
The Callan Saxon is an entrance function knobset: it locks from the outside with a key and locks or unlocks from the inside with a turn-button, so an occupant can leave it unlocked. Where the outside knob must stay locked with no turn-button, that is storeroom function. The Sargent 6G04 is a Grade 2 standard duty storeroom/closet knob lock with a single cylinder, and the Sargent 8XG04 is the Grade 1 heavy duty version with a 2-3/4 inch backset.
12) Do I have to order the Callan Saxon knobset left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The Saxon entrance knobset is fully reversible, so the same unit works on a left hand or right hand door and one person can install it. That also means you can stock one part number across a building instead of splitting your order by swing.
13) What is the difference between an entrance knob and a privacy or passage knob?
Entrance is the keyed function. The Saxon locks from the outside with a key and from the inside with a turn button, which is what you want on an exterior or unit entry door. A privacy knob has a push button or turn inside and no key, for bedrooms and baths, such as the Pamex FTF Baron privacy knobset. A passage knob does not lock at all, for halls and closets, like the Pamex FTF Baron passage knobset. Matching hardware in the same family across all three functions is how you keep one look through a building.
14) I need to key twenty units the same. Can the Callan Saxon be keyed alike across an order?
Yes. Keying is a required selection on the Saxon, and keyed alike is one of the choices, so a block of units can be ordered on one key. Keyed different is the other option if each tenant door needs its own key. Pick the keyway to match the rest of the property first, KW1 or SC1, since keyed alike only works within a single keyway.
15) Is a zinc knobset durable enough for a rental unit front door?
The Saxon is cast zinc and rated to BHMA Grade 3, which is the residential security grade. For a single family rental or a low turnover unit door that holds up fine. On a door cycled hard, a lobby, a shared laundry, a leasing office, the wear shows sooner and you are better off with a Grade 2 or Grade 1 in the same knob format, such as the Sargent 6G04 Grade 2 or the Schlage D Series Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical knob lock.
16) Can I use the Callan Saxon knobset on a classroom door?
The Callan Saxon is entrance function, which means it can be left unlocked from the inside with a turn-button. A classroom door that must be locked and unlocked from outside by key only calls for classroom function: the Dexter C2000 Series offers a Grade 2 classroom cylindrical ball knob lock, keyed and non-clutching, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the same thickness range the Saxon fits.
17) Which knobsets look like a substitute for the Callan Saxon entrance knob but will not lock the door?
The Callan Saxon is a keyed entry knobset with a turn-button on the inside. Several knobs in the same shape carry no lock at all: the Schlage A170 is a single dummy trim, the BEST 6K Series is a single dummy trim knob, and the Bravura Biloxi and Emtek Hammered Egg are dummy knobsets. Passage sets such as the Arrow MK01, the Arrow RK01, the Corbin Russwin CK4410 and the Falcon W101 latch the door but have no keyed or thumbturn locking. Match on function, not on the knob profile.
18) What other Grade 3 entrance knobsets are made by the same manufacturer as the Callan Saxon?
The Callan Saxon is a Grade 3 entrance knobset in zinc with adjustable 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset. Delaney Hardware builds the Belton, the Galway and the Olivia, each a Grade 3 entrance knobset, and the Delaney Brookhaven is an entry knobset in the Brookhaven Knob series. They give you a different knob profile at the same function and grade if the Saxon shape is not what the door calls for.
19) What keyed entry knob is closest to the Callan Saxon if I want solid brass instead of zinc?
The Callan Saxon is made of zinc. For a brass-bodied keyed knob, Deltana offers the 3381 Egg Knob Entry, the 6171 Round Knob Entry and the 6901 Portland Knob Entry, all entry function; the 3381 and 6171 fit 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors and the 6901 fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the same range as the Saxon. Omnia builds its knob latchsets in solid brass, though the 434/PA is passage function and the 434/0, 442/00 and 458/0 are dummies.
20) Is there a keyless option instead of a keyed Callan Saxon knob for a door where tenants keep losing keys?
The Callan Saxon is a keyed entry knobset with a 5-pin cylinder. The Lockey 3830 is a mechanical keyless combination knob lock with an auto-locking passage function for doors 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch thick, so it opens on a code rather than a key and needs no rekeying when an occupant changes. It is a different opening approach, not a same-prep swap for a cylinder lock.
21) I need one order to cover the entry and the interior doors of a unit. What pairs with the Callan Saxon?
The Callan Saxon covers the keyed entry door as a Grade 3 entrance knobset. For the interior doors, the Bravura Albany, Lynchburg and Dallas are Grade 2 passage knobsets, and the Bravura Biloxi is a Grade 2 dummy for a closet or a false door. Schlage Residential also sells the F500 Plymouth with Georgian knob as a combo pack with adjustable backsets and dual strikes for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the same door thickness range the Saxon fits.
22) What is the difference between the Callan Saxon and the Master Lock BC Series keyed entry knob?
Both are Grade 3 keyed entry knob locks. The Master Lock BC Series uses a biscuit knob shape. The Callan Saxon is zinc with fully reversible handing, an adjustable 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset, a 5-pin cylinder available in KW1 or SC1, a round corner latch faceplate with a 1/2 inch throw, and a door thickness range of 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. If the job is keyed on SC1, the Saxon can be ordered that way.
23) How much does the Callan Saxon knob stick out from the door face?
Projection is 2-3/8 inches. That matters where a door swings back against a wall, a cabinet, or another door in a tight corridor, and where a knob that sticks out further would strike. For comparison, the Omnia 434/PA knob latchset runs a 3 inch projection.
24) What finishes does the Callan Saxon entrance knobset come in?
Nine finishes, so you can match what is already hung: US3 bright brass, US5 antique brass, US10B oil rubbed bronze, US10BE edged bronze, US15 satin nickel, US15A antique nickel, US19 black, US26 polished chrome, and AS antique silver. That is the complete range, and the US numbers are the standard finish codes, so US15 satin nickel here reads the same as US15 on any other brand's hardware down the hall.
25) Are the screws on the Callan Saxon knobset visible on the inside rose?
Yes, the Saxon uses exposed screws rather than concealed ones. Practically that makes servicing quicker, since a maintenance tech can pull the knob without a spanner tool or hunting for a hidden set screw, but the inside rose will show two fasteners. If you want a clean face on a high visibility opening, that is the trade.
