Callan KS1011 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Callan Saxon passage knob fit a 1-3/8 inch interior door, or does it need a 1-3/4 inch door?
Both work. The Saxon passage knobset covers 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, which takes in standard hollow-core interior doors and heavier solid-core ones with no extra parts. Backset is adjustable between 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches, so it also drops into either of the two common bore locations without ordering a specific latch.
2) Can the Callan Saxon knobset go into an existing door with a 2-1/8 inch bore, or do I have to re-drill?
No re-drilling on a standard prep. The Saxon knobset uses a 2-1/8 inch cross bore and a 1 inch edge bore, which is the normal residential bored-door prep, so it goes straight into a door already drilled for a knob. The latch comes with a round corner faceplate, so if the door edge is mortised for a round corner latch it drops in as-is; a square corner mortise would need the edge recut.
3) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand Callan Saxon passage knob?
Neither. Handing is reversible on the Saxon passage knobset, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. It is built for one person to install, so a maintenance tech can hang it without a second set of hands. For a fleet of doors that means one item to stock instead of two.
4) Does the Callan Saxon passage knob lock, and where should it actually be used?
It does not lock. Passage function means both knobs turn freely at all times with no button, no thumbturn and no key. That makes it right for hallways, closets, pantries and laundry doors, where you want a latch that holds the door shut but nobody should ever be locked in or out. For a bedroom or bathroom you need a privacy function instead, and for a door that has to be secured you need an entrance or storeroom function.
5) Is a Grade 3 zinc knobset like the Callan Saxon good enough for an apartment building or an office corridor?
The Saxon is a Grade 3 residential-duty knobset in zinc, which suits apartment interiors, unit closets and hall doors inside a dwelling. For a commercial corridor, a school or anything seeing constant public traffic, step up: the Corbin Russwin CK4410 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lock and the Falcon X101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset with an interchangeable core. Grade 1 is the highest ANSI/BHMA cycle and strength tier, Grade 3 the lowest.
6) Will the Callan Saxon latch catch in the strike plate that is already on my door frame?
The Saxon latch throws 1/2 inch, which is the standard bored-lockset projection, so it engages a strike already cut for a knob or lever latch. What decides it is the faceplate shape at the door edge and the strike cutout in the jamb: the Saxon ships with a round corner faceplate. If the existing strike is a full lip or square style already mortised into the frame and the latch lines up at the same height and backset, reuse it. Change the backset setting on the latch to 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 to line up with what is bored.
7) I need to replace a Kwikset Polo passage knob in a rental unit. Will the Callan Saxon go in the same hole?
Yes, on the same prep. Both are bored cylindrical passage knobsets, and the Saxon uses the standard 2-1/8 inch cross bore with a 1 inch edge bore and an adjustable 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, so it fits a door already carrying a Polo passage knob. The Kwikset 200P-CP also ships with a round corner adjustable latch and round corner strike, which is the same latch geometry the Saxon uses. Only the finish and the knob shape change.
8) Is a dummy knob the same thing as a passage knob?
No. The Saxon passage knobset has a working latch with a 1/2 inch throw and a round corner latch faceplate, so the knob retracts a latch and holds the door closed. A dummy knob is surface mounted trim with no latch at all - it is pulled, not turned. The Schlage A170 single dummy trim is a Grade 2 non-keyed dummy for 1-3/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, the BEST 6K single dummy trim is a Grade 2 medium duty dummy, the Bravura Biloxi with round trim is a Grade 2 dummy knobset, and the Cal-Royal BA40 Barrington is a dummy knob cylindrical lock for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Order a dummy only for a door that does not need to latch, such as one leaf of an inactive pair or a closet door held by a ball catch.
9) Which passage knob is fire rated for a rated corridor or stair door?
The Falcon W101 Grade 2 medium duty passage/closet knob lock carries a fire rating and comes with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Falcon X101 Grade 1 heavy duty passage knobset is fire rated with an interchangeable core for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The Saxon is a Grade 3 residential passage knobset with an adjustable 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset.
10) The Saxon passage knob is Grade 3 - what should I use on a commercial opening that needs a higher grade?
For a passage knob at a higher ANSI/BHMA grade, the Schlage D10S Orbit knob passage latch is Grade 1 heavy duty, and the Falcon X101 cylindrical passage knobset is Grade 1 heavy duty with a fire rating and an interchangeable core, fitting doors from 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. The Corbin Russwin CK4310 Global knob passage/closet lock is Grade 1 for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. At Grade 2 there is the Falcon W101 medium duty passage/closet knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset and a fire rating, the Corbin Russwin CK4410, the Dexter C2000 passage ball knob, and the Arrow MK01. The Saxon itself is a Grade 3 residential knobset.
11) I need a bathroom or bedroom door to lock - what takes the place of a Saxon passage knob there?
A passage knob has no locking function and turns freely on both sides, so a bedroom or bath door needs a privacy knob instead. The Pamex FTF Baron knob lockset in privacy function is Grade 3 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal BER20 is a Grade 3 privacy knob lock with brass trim over the same thickness range. At Grade 2 there is the Dexter C2000 privacy ball knob for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
12) What do I order instead of a Saxon passage knob if the door has to be keyed?
The Saxon in passage function is non-keyed. For a keyed opening at the same Grade 3, the Cal-Royal BER00 is an entrance/office knob lock with a Kwikset keyway for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors - the same KW1 keyway family the Saxon's keyed siblings use - and the Pamex FTF Baron in entrance/office function is Grade 3 over that thickness range. The Kwikset 400P-CP Polo keyed entry knob is Grade 3 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors and ships with a round corner adjustable latch and round corner strike. The Master Lock BC Series biscuit knob is a Grade 3 keyed entry knob.
13) What passage knob should I use on a door thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
The Saxon fits doors from 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. For a thicker leaf, the Corbin Russwin CK4310 Global knob passage/closet lock is Grade 1 and covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Falcon X101 passage knobset is Grade 1 heavy duty covering 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch. Both are non-keyed passage function, the same free-turning operation as the Saxon.
14) How far does the Callan Saxon knob stick out from the door face?
Projection is 2-3/8 inches from the door face. That matters where a door swings back against a wall or a cabinet, or where two doors in a corner could clash, and it is the number to check against a door stop's standoff before you commit to a knob.
15) What finishes does the Callan Saxon passage knob come in, and can I match it to other doors in the building?
Nine finishes: US3 Bright Brass, US5 Antique Brass, US10B Oil Rubbed Bronze, US10BE Edged Bronze, US15 Satin Nickel, US15A Antique Nickel, US19 Black, US26 Polished Chrome, and AS Antique Silver. Those are the standard BHMA finish codes, so if the hardware already on your other openings is marked US15 or US26, the Saxon in the same code lines up. Finish is the only choice to make when ordering; function, backset and door thickness are all fixed or adjustable in the box.
16) Can the Callan Saxon passage knob be keyed or master keyed with the rest of my property?
No. The Saxon passage knobset has no cylinder and no keyway in it, so there is nothing to key or master key. If you need keyed doors on the same system, look at a keyed function on a Kwikset keyway, such as the Cal-Royal BER00 Grade 3 entrance knob lock with Kwikset keyway, and keep the Saxon for the closets and hall doors that never need to lock.
17) What is a comparable Grade 3 passage knobset if the Callan Saxon style is not the look I want?
The Pamex FTF Baron knob lockset in passage function is the closest match: Grade 3, passage function, and the same 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch door thickness range. Bravura also does Grade 2 passage knobsets in several styles, Albany and Lynchburg with round trim and Dallas with rectangular trim, if you want a different rose shape. All of these are bored cylindrical sets, so they use the same door prep.
18) I have a mix of doors on one floor and want the same knob look throughout - what matches a Saxon passage knob in other functions?
The Saxon is a Grade 3 zinc knobset in passage function, offered in nine finishes including US10B oil rubbed bronze, US15 satin nickel, US3 bright brass, US19 black, US5 antique brass, US26 polished chrome, US10BE edged bronze, US15A antique nickel, and AS antique silver. If you are standardizing across functions rather than staying in one series, the Pamex FTF Baron line runs Grade 3 in passage, privacy, and entrance/office for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal Barrington line covers entrance/office at BER00, privacy at BER20, and dummy at BA40 over the same thickness range. Working through one line keeps the knob shape and prep consistent from hall to bath to entry.
19) Is the Lockey 3830 keyless knob lock a substitute for a Saxon passage knob?
They are not interchangeable. The Lockey 3830 is a mechanical keyless combination knob lock with an auto-locking passage function for doors 1 3/16 inch to 2 inch, so the door secures itself and a code is required to get through from the outside. The Saxon passage knobset has no locking function and turns freely on both sides. Use the Saxon where the door only needs to latch, and a keyless combination lock where controlled access matters.
20) What replaces a Saxon passage knob on a storeroom or utility door that must stay locked?
Storeroom function keeps the outside knob locked at all times while the inside always releases, which a passage knob cannot do. The Sargent 6G04 is a Grade 2 standard duty storeroom/closet knob lock with a single cylinder, and the Sargent 8XG04 is a Grade 1 heavy duty storeroom/closet single cylinder knob lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The BEST 8K Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty knob lock in entrance function if the door should be lockable but openable by anyone from outside when left unlocked.
21) How does the Baldwin Estate 5011 Colonial passage knob differ from a Callan Saxon passage knob?
Both are passage/hall/closet knobs with no locking function. The Baldwin Estate 5011 Colonial is a passage knob supplied with a 5058 rose, and the Baldwin Estate 5000 Baltimore passage lock comes preconfigured with a 5048 rose, a 2-3/8 inch backset, and a full lip strike - a fixed backset rather than adjustable. The Saxon is a zinc knobset with an adjustable 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset and a round corner latch faceplate.
22) Can I use an Omnia 434/PA in place of a Callan Saxon passage knob?
The Omnia 434/PA is a traditional egg-shaped knob latchset in passage/hall/closet function with solid brass construction and a 3 inch projection. The Saxon is a zinc knobset with a 2-3/8 inch projection. Both are passage function, so the operation is the same, but the deeper projection and the egg knob shape change how far the hardware stands off the face of the door - worth checking against a door that swings near a wall or adjacent trim.
23) Is the Callan Saxon knob screws-visible or hidden screw mounting?
Screws are exposed on the Saxon, not concealed behind the rose. That is worth knowing if you are matching an existing set of doors where the current hardware has a clean rose with no visible fasteners, since the two will not look the same side by side.
24) I am buying a knob for a new door with no hardware installed - is a combo pack better than a single passage knobset?
The Schlage Residential F500 Plymouth with Georgian knob is a combo pack for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors with adjustable backsets and dual strikes, covering more than one opening in a single order. The Saxon is bought per function, in this case passage, with adjustable 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset and reversible handing for left or right hand doors. Choose per-function when the doors on the job call for different functions, and a combo pack when one door needs a matched set at once.
25) What is the difference between the Arrow MK01 and Arrow RK01 passage knobs when cross-shopping a Saxon?
Both are Grade 2 non-keyed passage/hall/closet cylindrical knob locks for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, the same thickness range the Saxon covers. The RK01 is specified with a ball knob and belongs to the RK Series, while the MK01 is in the MK Series. The difference is the knob design and series, not the function - both operate free on both sides like the Saxon.
