Camden Door Controls CX-IRB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Camden CX-IRB isolation relay run on a 12V access control power supply, or does it need 24V?
Either. The CX-IRB is selectable for 12 or 24V DC, so it drops into most low voltage access control, telephone entry, or automatic door circuits without a separate supply. Draw is only 40mA at 12 or 24V DC, so it adds almost nothing to your power budget.
2) How much load can the CX-IRB relay switch, and can it switch 120V AC?
Contacts are rated 8 amps at 30 VDC or 120 VAC, so it will switch a line-voltage 120V load as well as low voltage DC. Contacts are DPDT, giving you two independent sets of transfer contacts off one trigger, which is useful when you need to fire a door operator and signal a panel at the same time.
3) Will the Camden CX-IRB fit inside an automatic door operator header or a power supply cabinet?
It is sized for exactly that. The module measures 3/4 inch by 1-1/2 inch by 2-3/4 inch, small enough to tuck into an operator header or an existing power supply enclosure rather than adding a separate box. Self-adhesive Velcro tape comes with it, so you can mount it to a flat interior surface without drilling the cabinet.
4) Why would I add an isolation relay module to an access control circuit at all?
To keep one device from seeing electrical noise or induced voltage off another. The CX-IRB sits between them so the trigger side and the switched side share no electrical path, which is the usual fix when a card reader, telephone entry board, or door operator input is picking up false actuations or back EMF from a locking device. If your two devices happen to work at different voltages or one is line voltage, the isolation is doing double duty.
5) Can this relay module be mounted in an unheated garage, vestibule, or exterior enclosure?
Operating range is -40F to 158F (-40C to 70C), which covers unheated parking structures, vestibules, and cold-climate entrances as long as the module itself is inside a protected enclosure. It is a commercial-duty part, not a weatherproof one, so it still needs a housing that keeps water off it.
6) How do I tell if the CX-IRB relay is actually energizing during troubleshooting?
There is a red LED on the board that lights when the relay is activated. Press the button or fire the trigger input and watch the LED: if it lights and the load does not move, your problem is downstream of the contacts, not on the trigger side.
7) Is anything besides the relay module included, or do I need mounting hardware?
Self-adhesive Velcro tape ships with the CX-IRB, so no brackets or screws are needed for a typical cabinet install. You supply the wire and any wire nuts or ferrules for the connections.
