Metallics 18CTB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size does the Metallics 18CTB tap cut?
The 18CTB is a 1-8 tap, so it cuts 1 inch diameter threads at 8 threads per inch, which is the standard UNC coarse pitch for 1 inch. Use it on rod, couplings, or drilled holes that need to take 1-8 all-thread hanger rod.
2) What is the difference between a bottoming tap and a taper tap, and which one do I need?
A bottoming tap has almost no chamfer on the lead, so it threads nearly to the bottom of a blind hole. A taper tap has a long chamfered lead that eases into the hole but leaves several unthreaded turns at the bottom. The Metallics 18CTB is the bottoming type: reach for it when you need full 1-8 threads all the way down a closed hole, or to finish a hole that a taper tap started. For a through hole started from scratch, a taper tap is the easier cut.
3) Can I use the 18CTB to clean up damaged 1-8 threaded rod or a rusted coupling?
Yes. Chasing existing 1-8 threads is a common use for this tap, and the bottoming grind lets you run it right to the end of a coupling or a blind insert where a taper tap would stop short. It cuts 1 inch-8 threads only, so it will not clean 3/4-10 or 1-1/4 rod.
4) Is the Metallics 18CTB carbon steel or high speed steel, and does that matter for what I can tap?
It is carbon steel. Carbon steel taps cut fine in mild steel, aluminum, brass, and plastics at hand speeds, which covers most electrical and mechanical hanger work. For hardened or stainless material, or for powered tapping where heat builds up, a high speed steel tap holds its edge longer.
5) Do I need a specific drill size before running a 1-8 tap?
Yes, the hole has to be drilled to the tap drill size for 1-8 before the 18CTB will cut clean threads. For 1 inch-8 UNC the standard tap drill is 7/8 inch. Drilling undersize binds the tap and risks snapping it; drilling oversize leaves shallow threads with little holding power.
6) How many taps come in a Metallics 18CTB pack?
One tap per pack, supplied in a pouch. If you are stocking several trucks or a shop crib, order one unit per tap you need.
