1) Will the Carlon Adjust-A-Box work if I don't know my final wall finish thickness yet?
That's the whole point of the Adjust-A-Box. The patented design lets you move the box face from 0 to 1-3/4 inches after installation, so you can rough in before the finish material is decided and dial the box flush once drywall, tile backer, stone, or paneling goes on. No cutting out and replacing a box that ended up buried behind an extra layer.
2) Is the Carlon Adjust-A-Box for new work or old work?
New work. The Adjust-A-Box is a nail-on style box for open framing, listed for use with non-metallic sheathed cable per Article 314. If you're cutting into finished drywall with no stud access, you want an old work remodel box with wing clamps instead, not this one.
3) Does the Carlon Adjust-A-Box come in a two-gang size?
Three configurations are offered: a single gang adjustable wall box (B121ADJ), a double gang adjustable wall box (B234ADJ), and a double gang adjustable wall box with a range knockout (B234ADJC). All three carry the same adjustable depth feature.
4) Can I run metal conduit or BX into a Carlon Adjust-A-Box?
No. The Adjust-A-Box is designed and listed for non-metallic sheathed cable under Article 314. It's a PVC box, so there's no metal raceway bonding path through it. For armored cable or EMT runs, use a metal box or a nonmetallic box specifically listed for that wiring method.
5) What is the difference between the Carlon B234ADJ and the B234ADJC?
Both are double gang adjustable wall boxes. The B234ADJC adds a range knockout, which is the larger opening you need when you're feeding a range, dryer, or other large-conductor circuit into the box. If you're wiring ordinary receptacles or switches, the plain B234ADJ is the one.
6) Is the Carlon Adjust-A-Box UL listed for a commercial job spec?
Yes, it carries UL listing E11461. That plus the Article 314 listing for NM cable is what an inspector or a spec reviewer is looking for on a nonmetallic outlet box.
7) Why would I pay for an adjustable box instead of a standard blue nail-on box?
You'd pay for it where the finish is uncertain or thick. A fixed box has to be set to an exact depth at rough-in, and if the finish changes (tile over backer, a second layer of drywall, a furring change) the box ends up recessed or proud and has to be reworked. The Adjust-A-Box moves 0 to 1-3/4 inches after it's nailed in, so the fix is a screwdriver at trim-out. On a straight single-layer drywall job with a settled detail, a standard fixed box does the same work.
8) How many cable entries does the Carlon Adjust-A-Box have?
Four knockouts, which gives you feed-through capability on a daisy-chained receptacle or switch run plus room for a switch leg or travelers. Enough entries that you're not fighting for a cable path on a mid-run device box.
9) Will a PVC outlet box hold up in a damp basement or a parking structure?
The Adjust-A-Box body is PVC, so it won't rust or corrode the way a steel box does in humid or chemically aggressive spaces. That said, it is listed for NM cable under Article 314, and NM cable itself isn't permitted in wet locations, so the wiring method is usually what governs the space, not the box material.
