Carlon E955E – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size PVC conduit does the Carlon E955 expansion coupling come in?
The Carlon E955 gray PVC expansion coupling is made in six trade sizes: 1/2 inch (E955D), 3/4 inch (E955E), 1 inch (E955F), 1-1/4 inch (E955G), 1-1/2 inch (E955H), and 2 inch (E955J). Pick the coupling that matches the trade size of the conduit run you are breaking into. There is no adapting up or down; the size on the fitting is the size of the raceway it belongs in.
2) How much movement will a Carlon E955 expansion coupling take?
Up to 2 inches of expansion. That is the working travel the E955 gives a Schedule 40 PVC run for thermal growth and building movement. Size your gap at install for the temperature swing the run will see, because whatever you leave open is what the coupling has left to absorb in the other direction. If your building joint or seismic detail needs more than 2 inches of movement, this is not the fitting for that run.
3) Can I use a Carlon E955 coupling on rigid metal conduit or on EMT?
No. The E955 is a PVC fitting for rigid nonmetallic conduit, Schedule 40 PVC. It solvent welds to PVC, so it has nothing to grip on EMT or on threaded rigid metal. For a steel raceway crossing an expansion joint you need a metallic expansion fitting made for that conduit type instead.
4) Is the Carlon expansion coupling UL listed for a commercial inspection?
Yes, the E955 expansion coupling is UL listed under file E23018. That listing is what an inspector wants to see on a nonmetallic raceway fitting in a commercial or institutional job, and it is marked on the fitting itself.
5) Will a gray PVC expansion coupling match the conduit already run in my building?
Gray is the standard color for Schedule 40 electrical PVC, and the E955 is gray PVC, so it reads the same as the rest of a typical electrical raceway. Confirm the existing run is Schedule 40 electrical conduit rather than plumbing-weight pipe, since the coupling is built to Schedule 40 dimensions and that is what its socket is sized to accept.
6) Do I need an expansion coupling on an outdoor PVC conduit run, or can I just solvent weld straight through?
PVC moves a lot with temperature, which is why a coupling like the E955 exists. Anywhere the run sees a real temperature swing (exposed exterior, unconditioned space, a rooftop), or crosses a structural or seismic joint, a rigidly glued run has nowhere to put that growth and it pushes on the boxes and straps at each end. The E955 gives that run up to 2 inches of travel while keeping the raceway continuous. Fully interior, conditioned, short runs are where you can generally weld straight through.
7) What is the difference between the Carlon E955 short expansion coupling and a full-length expansion fitting?
Travel is the difference. The E955 is the short-body version, good for up to 2 inches of movement, and it takes up correspondingly less length in the run. Longer-bodied expansion fittings exist for joints that have to swallow several inches. Match the fitting to the calculated movement of your run: if 2 inches covers it, the short coupling is less pipe to cut out and less to support.
8) Does the Carlon E955 need a bonding jumper across it?
The E955 is PVC, a nonmetallic fitting in a nonmetallic raceway, so the coupling itself carries nothing. Grounding in a PVC system runs on the equipment grounding conductor pulled in the raceway, and that conductor passes through the coupling and stays continuous on its own. The concern with bonding jumpers belongs to metallic expansion fittings, where the fitting breaks the metal ground path.
9) Is a 2-inch expansion coupling the same thing as a coupling that expands 2 inches?
Two different numbers, and mixing them up is the common ordering mistake here. Every E955, from the 1/2 inch through the 2 inch, gives the same 2 inches of expansion travel. The trade size on the part number is the conduit diameter it glues to. So E955J is the 2 inch trade size fitting, and it also happens to expand 2 inches, same as the 1/2 inch E955D does.
10) What do I need besides the coupling to install it?
PVC solvent cement rated for electrical conduit, and enough slack in the run to set the coupling at the right open position for the temperature at install. You will also want the conduit supported on both sides of the fitting so the raceway slides in the coupling rather than dragging the straps. The E955 is the coupling only; cement is bought separately.
