Carlon UA6AHB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the standard end and bell end Carlon 30-degree PVC elbows?
Bell end versions have an integral belled socket on one end, so you can solvent weld a plain length of Schedule 40 conduit straight into the elbow without adding a separate coupling. Standard end versions are plain on both ends and need a coupling at each joint. Carlon offers the bell end in 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 3-1/2, 4, 5, and 6 inch trade sizes (UA6AEB through UA6ARB). The 1/2, 2-1/2 inch sizes come standard end only.
2) What trade sizes does the Carlon UA6A 30-degree Schedule 40 elbow come in?
Trade sizes run 1/2 inch through 6 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 3-1/2, 4, 5, and 6 inch. Order by MPN, for example UA6AD for 1/2 inch standard end and UA6AN for 4 inch standard end. Size matches the conduit trade size, not a measured outside diameter.
3) Can this PVC elbow be direct buried underground?
Schedule 40 PVC conduit and its fittings are rated for direct burial as well as concrete encasement and above-ground use, and the description lists underground electrical routing as an application for this elbow. The 30-degree angle is what installers reach for on a buried run to bring the conduit up out of a trench toward a riser without the sharp transition of a 90.
4) What does standard radius mean on a PVC conduit elbow, and does it matter for pulling wire?
Standard radius means the bend follows the minimum radius the code tables allow for that trade size, as opposed to a long-sweep or special-radius elbow with a wider arc. At 30 degrees the deflection is shallow enough that standard radius pulls fine for most conductor runs. If you are pulling large fiber or communications cable with a manufacturer-specified minimum bend radius larger than the elbow, spec a special radius sweep instead of this one.
5) Is the gray Carlon elbow the electrical one or the plumbing one?
Gray is the electrical color. The UA6A is gray PVC rigid non-metallic conduit fitting carrying a UL listing, not white or black plumbing DWV pipe. If a fitting on your job is white, it is not conduit and should not be in the raceway.
6) Do I need anything besides the elbow to make the connection?
You need PVC conduit solvent cement, and with a standard end elbow you also need a coupling at each joint unless the mating conduit already has a belled end. Choosing the bell end version (for example UA6AFB in 1 inch) removes one coupling per joint. No cement, gaskets, or hardware ship with the fitting itself.
7) Where is the Carlon UA6A conduit elbow made?
The 30-degree Schedule 40 elbow is manufactured in the United States, which matters on federal, state, and institutional jobs carrying domestic sourcing requirements in the specification.
