Carlon UA5AE – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What trade sizes does the Carlon 22.5-degree Schedule 40 PVC elbow come in?
The Carlon UA5A series 22.5-degree elbow runs from 1/2 inch through 6 inch trade size: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 3-1/2, 4, 5 and 6 inch. Standard (plain socket) ends are offered in every one of those sizes. Bell end is offered in 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 inch only, so below 2 inch you are ordering a standard end and picking up a separate coupling.
2) What is the difference between the standard end and bell end version of this PVC elbow?
Same 22.5-degree Schedule 40 elbow, different termination. The standard end has plain socket ends on both sides, so joining it to a straight run needs a separate coupling. The bell end version has an integral belled socket, so a length of Schedule 40 conduit solvent welds straight into the elbow with no coupling. On a long underground run with a lot of sweeps, the bell end saves a fitting and a joint at every bend. Bell end is only made in 2 inch (UA5AJB) through 6 inch (UA5ARB).
3) Can I use a gray Carlon PVC elbow outdoors and direct buried?
Yes. Gray Schedule 40 PVC is the rigid non-metallic conduit material used for exposed outdoor work, underground duct, and concrete encasement, and the gray compound is the sunlight-resistant one. It is UL listed under E323335 as rigid non-metallic conduit fitting. Note that gray electrical PVC is not the same as white plumbing PVC, even at the same trade size, and the two should not be mixed on a job.
4) Will this Carlon elbow glue to Schedule 80 PVC conduit?
Yes, as long as the trade size matches. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 conduit share the same outside diameter at a given trade size, so a Schedule 40 socket fits Schedule 80 pipe and the same PVC solvent cement joins them. Schedule 80 has the thicker wall and less inside area, so the joint is fine mechanically but you have transitioned to a Schedule 40 wall at the bend. Where the spec calls for Schedule 80 through the whole run, such as an exposed riser subject to physical damage, use a Schedule 80 elbow instead of this one.
5) Is standard radius or long radius the right elbow for pulling large cable?
The Carlon UA5A is a standard radius elbow. Standard radius meets code bend radius for ordinary building wire and is what most branch and feeder conduit runs use. Where you are pulling large fiber, communications cable, or a manufacturer specifies a minimum bend radius greater than the conduit standard, a long radius (special radius) sweep is the fitting to order instead. At a shallow 22.5 degrees the radius penalty is small, so standard radius covers most routing corrections.
6) What do I need besides the elbow to make up the joint?
Nothing ships with the elbow beyond the fitting itself. PVC conduit elbows are solvent welded, so you need PVC conduit cement rated for electrical rigid non-metallic conduit, and with a standard end elbow you also need a coupling on each side unless the adjoining conduit is belled. No threads, no gaskets, no set screws. Order the bell end version in 2 inch and up if you want to drop the couplings.
7) Is the Carlon UA5A elbow UL listed for a permitted electrical inspection?
Yes. The 22.5-degree Schedule 40 elbow carries UL listing E323335 as a rigid non-metallic conduit fitting, which is what an inspector looks for on a PVC raceway system. It is manufactured in the United States.
8) What is the Carlon part number for a 2 inch 22.5-degree Schedule 40 elbow?
Carlon numbers this family by size with a letter suffix: 1/2 inch is UA5AD, 3/4 inch UA5AE, 1 inch UA5AF, 1-1/4 inch UA5AG, 1-1/2 inch UA5AH, 2 inch UA5AJ, 2-1/2 inch UA5AK, 3 inch UA5AL, 3-1/2 inch UA5AM, 4 inch UA5AN, 5 inch UA5AP and 6 inch UA5AR. Add a B for the bell end version, so a 2 inch bell end is UA5AJB and a 4 inch bell end is UA5ANB.
9) Can I mix Carlon elbows with another brand of gray PVC conduit on the same run?
Yes. Gray Schedule 40 rigid non-metallic conduit is a dimensionally standardized product, so a Carlon UA5A elbow sockets onto any UL listed Schedule 40 PVC conduit of the same trade size, regardless of who made the straight lengths. Use the same PVC conduit cement throughout. What you cannot mix is schedule-to-fitting mismatch on the socket depth or plumbing-grade PVC.
