1) What size PVC conduit does the Carlon E940 coupling fit?
The Carlon E940 series socket coupling is made in eight trade sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Pick the coupling that matches the trade size of the rigid PVC conduit you are joining, not the wire fill. The 1/2 inch is E940DRL loose or E940DR-CTN by the carton; the 3 inch is E940LRL loose or E940LR single.
2) Is the Carlon E940 a slip coupling or does it need to be glued?
It is a socket coupling, meaning both ends are belled sockets that the conduit slides into and is solvent cemented in place. It is not a repair or slip coupling, so you cannot use it to join two conduit runs that are already fixed at both ends and cannot be sprung apart. For that situation you need a slip or repair-style coupling instead. Solvent cement is not included with the coupling and has to be ordered separately.
3) Can I use a gray PVC electrical coupling for plumbing or water lines?
No. The E940 is a gray Schedule electrical conduit coupling listed under UL E32447 for electrical raceway use, and it carries no pressure rating for water. Gray electrical PVC and white plumbing PVC are different products and are not interchangeable in either direction. Use plumbing rated PVC fittings for any pressurized line.
4) What is the difference between the carton pack and loose pack Carlon couplings?
Same coupling, different packaging. The carton retail packs (part numbers ending -CTN, such as E940ER-CTN in 3/4 inch) come bagged and barcoded for shelf or counter sale. The loose packs (E940ERL in 3/4 inch) are bulk, which is what most contractors want when they are pulling a hundred couplings for a job. In 3 inch the choices are a single standard pack, E940LR, or loose, E940LRL.
5) Which Carlon coupling part number do I order for 1 inch or 1-1/4 inch conduit?
For 1 inch, the Carlon coupling is E940FRL loose or E940FR-CTN by the carton. For 1-1/4 inch it is E940GRL loose or E940GR-CTN. The letter in the middle of the number is the trade size code, so F is 1 inch and G is 1-1/4 inch, which is handy when you are reading a takeoff list.
6) Do I need a separate bonding conductor when I join conduit with PVC couplings?
PVC raceway is nonmetallic and does not serve as an equipment grounding path, so an equipment grounding conductor has to be pulled in the raceway with the circuit conductors. That applies to the whole PVC run, coupling included. If you are transitioning from EMT or rigid steel to PVC, the metal portion still needs to be bonded on its own.
7) Can I use these couplings to join PVC conduit to EMT or rigid metal conduit?
No. A socket coupling has a PVC belled socket on both ends and is solvent cemented, so it only mates to PVC conduit of the same trade size. Going from PVC to EMT or rigid steel takes a transition or terminal adapter, not a coupling.
8) Will a Carlon PVC coupling hold up in a wet or corrosive location?
PVC is the reason people specify it in those spots. The E940 coupling is nonmetallic, so it will not rust the way a steel coupling does in a wash down area, a parking structure, or buried duct work. Corrosion resistance is a property of the material, not a coating that can be scratched off.
9) Are Carlon E940 couplings good for a large commercial or industrial job?
They cover the range most commercial work needs, 1/2 inch up through 3 inch, and the -CTN carton packs are the practical way to buy them in volume for a distribution job or a facility standardizing on one fitting line. Carlon manufactures these in Canada. Anything above 3 inch trade size is outside the E940 range.
