1) What does a Carlon E943 male adapter actually connect to what?
It's the transition piece between PVC conduit and anything threaded. One end is a socket that solvent-welds over the outside of Schedule 40 PVC conduit; the other end is male NPT thread that screws into a box hub, a threaded fitting, or a metallic raceway. So it's how you get non-metallic conduit into a panel knockout or tie a PVC run into an EMT or rigid system. It is not a coupling and not a female adapter, so if you need thread on the inside rather than the outside, this is the wrong half of the pair.
2) What trade sizes does the Carlon E943 male adapter come in?
Eight trade sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Trade size here is the conduit size the socket accepts and the matching thread size, so a 3/4 inch adapter takes 3/4 inch Schedule 40 PVC and threads a 3/4 inch hub. If you're running 4 inch conduit, this family doesn't go that big.
3) Do I need glue for a Carlon PVC male adapter, or does it just push on?
The socket end is a solvent-weld joint, so it needs PVC conduit cement, not a push fit or a set screw. Clean the conduit end, apply cement, seat it fully in the socket and hold it a few seconds. The male thread end is mechanical, so that side just screws into the hub or fitting. Cement is not included with the adapter, so put it on the same order if you don't have it on the truck.
4) Can I use a PVC male adapter to bring underground conduit up into a metal panel?
That's the normal use for it. The socket cements onto the PVC riser and the male thread lands in the panel hub or knockout with a locknut and bushing, which is how a non-metallic run terminates into a metallic enclosure. Because the fitting itself is non-metallic it doesn't carry ground, so the equipment grounding conductor has to be pulled through the conduit; the adapter is not a bonding path.

The part number changes with pack, not just size. In 3/4 inch: E943EBU is the single, E943E15L and E943E5-UPC are bagged, E943E-CTN is the carton and E943ERL is the reel pack. Same pattern in 1/2 inch: E943DBU single, E943D15L and E943D10-UPC bags, E943D-CTN carton, E943DRL reel. The larger sizes are carton or reel only, for example E943GR-CTN and E943GRL in 1-1/4 inch. Order the single for a service call, the carton or reel for a rough-in.
6) Will a PVC male adapter corrode in a wet or corrosive location like a car wash or water treatment plant?
PVC is the reason people specify this fitting in those rooms. The adapter is non-metallic Schedule 40 PVC with chemical resistance, so it won't rust the way a steel adapter does at a wet slab penetration or in a chemical feed room. The tradeoff is mechanical: PVC has no impact strength of steel, so in traffic areas or where the conduit is exposed to physical damage a rigid metal system is the better call.
7) What's the difference between a male adapter and a female adapter on PVC conduit?
It's which way the thread faces. A male adapter has external thread and a socket for the conduit, so you use it when you're screwing into something female, like a threaded box hub, a knockout with a locknut, or a coupling on a rigid metal run. A female adapter has internal thread and takes a male-threaded pipe or nipple into it. Both cement to the conduit the same way. If you're feeding a threaded nipple that's already sticking out of the enclosure, you want the female, not this one.
