1) What size PVC conduit does the Carlon E997 end bell fit?
The Carlon gray PVC end bell is made in eleven trade sizes, from 1 inch up through 8 inch: 1 in (E997F), 1-1/4 in (E997G), 1-1/2 in (E997H), 2 in (E997J), 2-1/2 in (E997K), 3 in (E997L), 3-1/2 in (E997M), 4 in (E997N), 5 in (E997P), 6 in (E997R) and 8 in (E997T). Order by the trade size of the conduit run it terminates, not by the size of the opening it sits in.
2) What does an end bell actually do on a conduit run, and do I need one?
An end bell is a termination fitting for the open end of a rigid nonmetallic conduit, giving a flared, smooth entry so conductors are not dragged across a cut pipe edge during a pull. Use one wherever a PVC run breaks out into a manhole, handhole, pull box, vault wall or duct bank face and the wire has to enter or leave unprotected. If the conduit instead lands on a box, enclosure or coupling with its own hub, you do not need an end bell there, you need a terminal adapter or male adapter.
3) Will a PVC end bell hold up cast into concrete or buried in a duct bank?
Construction is non-metallic PVC, so there is nothing in it to rust or corrode the way a steel bell mouth would in a wet vault, a duct bank encased in concrete, or direct-buried soil. That is the usual reason it gets specified over a metallic termination on underground work.
4) Can I use the same end bell on Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 PVC conduit?
Yes. Rigid nonmetallic conduit is sized by trade size, and Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 of the same trade size share the same outside diameter, so a 4 inch end bell socket takes 4 inch conduit of either schedule. Match the trade size and the fitting lands; the schedule only changes the wall thickness on the inside of the pipe.
5) Do I need cement to install a Carlon PVC end bell, and is it included?
The end bell is the fitting only. It is a solvent weld socket fitting for rigid nonmetallic conduit, so plan on PVC conduit cement and a clean, square-cut, deburred pipe end. Cement, cleaner and any duct bank spacers or grout are separate line items.
6) I need to order end bells for a duct bank with mixed 2 inch power and 4 inch communication ducts. Can I get both from the same Carlon part?
Both sizes come from the same E997 family, just different part numbers: E997J for 2 inch and E997N for 4 inch. Sizing runs 1 inch through 8 inch, so a duct bank mixing several trade sizes can be terminated with one family and one submittal reference (UL E23018) rather than sourcing bells from separate lines. Count one bell per duct end that opens into the vault.
7) Is a PVC end bell the same thing as a PVC bell end or a terminal adapter?
They are three different parts and buyers mix them up constantly. An end bell is a termination fitting that goes on the open end of a duct where wire enters or exits, typically at a vault or duct bank face. A bell end (sometimes called a belled end) is the integral flared socket formed on one end of a length of conduit so the next stick slips in without a coupling. A terminal adapter or male adapter threads the conduit into a box or enclosure knockout. The Carlon E997 is the first of those.
8) Can I use a Carlon PVC end bell where the conduit stubs out of the floor slab into an electrical room?
Yes, that is a normal use for it. Anywhere a nonmetallic duct opens and conductors pass out unprotected, including a slab stub-up, a pull box knockout that has no hub, or a duct bank into a manhole, the bell gives a smooth flared mouth instead of a cut pipe edge. Where the stub-up instead terminates into a piece of equipment or a hubbed enclosure, use a threaded adapter at that connection.
