1) Will a Carlon UB9 Schedule 80 elbow work in an underground or direct-burial run?
Yes. The UB9 series is Schedule 80 PVC, the heavy-wall version, and the description calls out underground conduit runs and outdoor routing among its applications. Gray rigid non-metallic PVC doesn't corrode in soil the way steel does, and the heavy wall is what gets specified where the raceway is exposed to physical damage. Carrying UL E323335.
2) What sizes do Carlon 90-degree Schedule 80 extended radius elbows come in?
Trade sizes run 1 inch, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 inch. Order the B suffix parts for bell end, such as UB9DJB for 2 inch with a 24 inch radius.
4) Why use an extended radius elbow instead of a standard PVC 90?
Pulling tension. A standard factory 90 has a tight sweep, and on a long run with large conductors that bend is where the pull stalls and where jacket damage happens. The UB9 series uses radii from 18 inches up to 120 inches, so the conductor changes direction gradually. Rule of thumb on the job: the bigger the cable and the longer the run, the longer the radius you want. For a short branch circuit in 1 inch, an 18 inch radius is plenty; for a 4 inch feeder duct bank, that is where the 48, 60 or 120 inch sweeps earn their keep.
5) Will a Carlon Schedule 80 elbow connect to Schedule 40 PVC conduit?
Yes. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 rigid nonmetallic conduit share the same outside diameter at every trade size, so a Schedule 80 fitting solvent welds to Schedule 40 pipe of the same size. Schedule 80 has the thicker wall and therefore a smaller inside diameter, which counts against your conduit fill, so size the raceway on the Schedule 80 ID for the portion of the run that uses it.
6) Is the Carlon UB9 elbow UL listed for electrical conduit?
UL listed under file E323335. That is the number an inspector or a spec writer will want on the submittal, and it is what makes the fitting acceptable as part of a rigid nonmetallic conduit system rather than as plain plumbing PVC.

9) Will a gray Carlon Schedule 80 elbow match the DB or utility duct already in my trench?
Color and material match: gray PVC, the standard electrical color, so it looks right alongside other gray raceway. Fit is a different question. Schedule 80 is sized to conduit dimensions, so it mates with Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 rigid PVC conduit of the same trade size. It is not the right elbow for utility duct that uses a different OD, and it will not thread into rigid steel. If what is in the trench is gray rigid PVC conduit, the UB9 belongs there.

UB9FJ is the 2 inch with a 36 inch radius, standard end. Want the belled socket instead, that is UB9FKB in 2-1/2 inch or UB9FJB in 2 inch at the same 36 inch radius. The letter pattern runs radius then size, so UB9C is 18 inch, UB9D is 24 inch, UB9F is 36 inch, UB9H is 48 inch and UB9I is 60 inch.
11) What is the largest sweep available in a 4 inch PVC 90-degree elbow?
A 120 inch radius, part UB9NN, in 4 inch Schedule 80. That is the longest sweep in the UB9 range and it is meant for large feeder pulls where even a 48 inch bend loads the cable too hard. The 4 inch is also available at 24, 36 and 48 inch radii, with bell end offered at 24, 36 and 48.
