OATEY 270040 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size pipe does the Cherne 270040 Test-Ball plug fit?
The Cherne Test-Ball 270040 is a single-size plug for 4 inch (100 mm) nominal pipe. Deflated it measures 3.25 inches in diameter and 6.5 inches long, so it slides into a 4 inch opening with room to work, then expands against the wall when inflated. The natural rubber body seals in round and out-of-round pipe alike.
2) How much head pressure can a 4 inch Cherne Test-Ball plug hold during a DWV test?
Maximum back pressure is 13 psi (0,9 bar), equal to 30 feet (9.1 m) of head. That covers a standard three-story stack test. If your column of water will stand taller than 30 feet above the plug, this is the wrong plug for that test location.
3) What pressure do you inflate the Cherne 270040 test ball to?
Inflate to 30 psi (2,1 bar). That is the inflation pressure for the plug body and it is a different number from the 13 psi of back pressure the plug will hold once set. Do not confuse the two: overinflating past 30 psi risks the rubber body.
4) What do I need to inflate a Cherne Test-Ball plug, or does it come with a pump?
The plug uses a standard tire air fitting, so any shop compressor, 12V inflator, or hand pump with a Schrader chuck and a gauge will fill it. No proprietary fitting is required. The plug itself ships with the ring and chain assembly; you supply the air source and gauge.
5) What keeps an inflatable test plug from getting sucked down the drain line?
A ring and chain assembly on the 270040 gives you a tether point. Tie the chain off outside the opening and the plug cannot be drawn into the DWV system if it slips or loses air during the test. Plugs without a chain eye offer no such retrieval.
6) Is the Cherne 270040 for pressure testing water supply lines?
No. It is a DWV plug, built for drain, waste and vent testing at up to 13 psi. Supply piping is tested at far higher pressures and needs a mechanical or threaded test plug rated for that service. Use the Test-Ball on sanitary, waste and vent lines only.
7) Does the Cherne Test-Ball work in cast iron, PVC and clay, or is it pipe-material specific?
Single-size Test-Ball plugs are made to test drain, waste and vent systems in every type of pipe. The seal comes from the natural rubber body expanding against the inside wall, so the pipe material does not matter as long as the inside diameter suits a 4 inch nominal plug. The rubber also takes up out-of-round conditions common in older cast iron and clay.
8) How heavy is a 4 inch Cherne test ball for a service truck kit?
It weighs 0.7 pounds. That makes it easy to carry several sizes on the truck, and light enough that the ring and chain is doing real work holding it against water pressure rather than its own mass.
