OATEY 270067 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Cherne 6 in. Test-Ball plug fit through a test tee or floor drain opening?
Deflated, the Cherne 270067 Test-Ball measures 5.25 in. diameter by 9 in. long, so it passes through openings smaller than the 6 in. line it seals. That is what lets you feed it through a test tee, sanitary tee or floor drain and then inflate it in place.
2) How much head pressure can a 6 inch inflatable test ball hold back?
Maximum back pressure is 13 psi (0,9 bar), equal to 30 ft. (9.1 M) of water column. If your DWV stack test puts more than 30 feet of head on the plug, it is past rating and you need to break the column into shorter test sections.
3) What do I inflate the Cherne Test-Ball with, and to what pressure?
Inflate to 30 psi (2,1 bar). The plug uses a standard tire air fitting, so a shop compressor, a tire inflator chuck or a hand pump with a Schrader head all connect without an adapter. Note that 30 psi is the inflation figure, not the pressure the plug will hold back.
4) How do I keep a test plug from getting sucked down the stack during a DWV test?
The 270067 comes with a ring and chain assembly built onto the plug. You tie the chain off outside the opening and it holds the plug back if the head pressure tries to draw it into the system, which is the usual way an inflatable gets lost in a line.
5) Is an inflatable test ball or a mechanical test plug better for a 6 inch DWV test?
Go inflatable when the only way at the pipe is through a restricted opening, or when the pipe is out of round. The 270067 deflates to 5.25 in. to pass a 6 in. tee or drain, then the rubber body expands to seal irregular bore. A mechanical expansion plug needs straight open access to the pipe end and works best in true round pipe, but it holds without air and there is nothing to lose pressure. For long fill-and-hold stack tests up to 30 ft. of head, the inflatable is rated for the job.
6) Can the Cherne 270067 be used in cast iron, PVC and clay pipe, or just plastic?
Single-size Test-Ball plugs test drain, waste and vent systems in every type of pipe. The seal comes from the natural rubber body expanding against the bore, not from any pipe-specific fitting, so cast iron, plastic and clay all work as long as the line is nominal 6 in.
7) How heavy is the 6 in. Test-Ball plug and how much air does it take to fill?
It weighs 2.2 lb and has a volume of 0.195, so a small portable compressor or even a hand pump fills it. That light weight is why the ring and chain matters: there is not enough mass to resist a column of water pushing on it.
8) What is the exact part number to order for the Cherne 6 inch Test-Ball plug?
Oatey/Cherne part number 270067, a black single-size 6 in. Test-Ball plug. Model and MPN are both 270067, so there are no size or option suffixes to specify when ordering.
