Color-Keyed 54148 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What cable size does the green Color Keyed one-hole copper lug take?
It's sized for #1 AWG conductor only. The green die color code is the identification for that size on Color Keyed tooling, so if you're terminating 1/0 or #2 you need the lug built for that size, not this one.
2) Can I use this copper lug on a 15kV or 35kV cable termination?
Yes. The Color Keyed standard barrel one-hole lug carries a 35 kV rating, which covers medium-voltage work at 5, 15, 25 and 35 kV as well as 600V class. Note the lug itself has no insulation, so the termination still needs your kit's stress cone, tape or heat shrink.
3) Is this a compression lug or a mechanical set-screw lug?
It's a compression (crimp) lug with a standard barrel, so it needs a hydraulic or battery crimp tool with the die matched to the green #1 AWG code. There's no set screw, so you can't install it with a hex key.
4) Is this lug UL listed for a utility or institutional job spec?
It's built to UL file E9809, which is what the submittal usually wants to see for compression connectors. Material is copper, so it's for copper conductor, not aluminum.
5) Is a Color Keyed lug the same thing as a Blackburn lug?
Same product. Color Keyed is the sub-brand label and the line is catalogued as Color Keyed / Blackburn, so a spec calling for either one is satisfied by these part numbers.
6) Will a copper lug work on aluminum conductor?
No. This one is copper, intended for copper conductor. For aluminum or dual-rated runs you want an AL9CU rated connector instead, otherwise you're setting up a dissimilar-metal joint at the termination.
