Color-Keyed 54130 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will this lug work on 8 AWG stranded copper conductor only, or can I use it on aluminum?
It is a copper-bodied lug sized for 8 AWG conductor, so it is intended for copper cable of that size. Do not substitute it onto an aluminum conductor; aluminum needs a lug rated and marked for aluminum (AL or AL9CU) with the appropriate oxide inhibitor. Using a copper-only barrel on aluminum is a dissimilar metal connection and is not a listed use.
2) Can I use this lug in a 15kV or 25kV switchgear termination?
Yes. The lug is rated to 35 kV, which covers the common 15 kV and 25 kV class medium-voltage terminations as well as 600 V work. The rating belongs to the lug itself; the cable termination kit and stress cone still have to be rated for your system voltage.
3) Is this an insulated lug or bare copper?
Bare. The barrel carries no insulation, so the red coloring is the die/color-key identification rather than an insulating sleeve. If the termination needs covering, plan on separate heat shrink or a boot.
4) What does the red color key on a Blackburn Color Keyed lug mean?
Red here is the color key for the 8 AWG barrel. On a Color Keyed / Blackburn system the color on the barrel matches the crimp die color, so an inspector can confirm from across the gear that the right die was used on the right conductor size. It is not a phase marking.
5) Is this a compression lug or a mechanical set-screw lug?
It is a standard barrel compression lug, so it is crimped onto the conductor with a die tool, not tightened with a set screw. If your spec calls for a reusable mechanical connector, this is the wrong style.
6) One-hole versus two-hole lug: which should I be ordering for my bus pad?
This is a one-hole tongue, which lands on a single stud and is the usual choice for breaker pads, ground bars and transformer studs with a single bolt. If the equipment pad is drilled on NEMA two-hole centers, or the spec calls for a two-bolt connection to resist rotation on larger feeders, you need a two-hole tongue instead. At 8 AWG a one-hole termination is typical.
