Color-Keyed 54112 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which conductor size does the Color Keyed purple one-hole lug take?
It is sized for 4/0 AWG conductor only. Color Keyed lugs are color coded by cable size, and purple is the 4/0 AWG key, so if you are terminating a different gauge you need the lug keyed to that size rather than this one. The barrel is copper.
2) Will this work on aluminum conductor?
No. This is a copper lug for copper conductor. For aluminum or dual-rated runs you need a connector marked AL9CU or an aluminum-bodied lug instead; putting bare copper on aluminum invites galvanic corrosion at the termination.
3) Does this cable lug come insulated or do I have to insulate it myself?
Bare copper, no insulation on the lug. Insulation material is listed as none, so on medium voltage work you cover the barrel and tongue yourself with heat shrink, mastic and tape, or a manufactured termination kit suited to the voltage class.
4) Is the Color Keyed 4/0 lug UL listed for inspection sign-off?
Yes. The lug is UL listed under file E9809, which is the reference an inspector or submittal reviewer will want for a compression connector on a copper conductor.
5) Is this a mechanical set screw lug or a compression lug?
It is a compression type, standard barrel one-hole lug. You crimp it with a tool and die matched to the color key, not tighten a set screw, so budget for the correct die in your crimper before the install.
6) Can I use the purple color coding for phase marking in a three-phase panel?
The purple is a size key, not a phase code. It identifies the lug as the 4/0 AWG member of the Color Keyed line, which is what lets a foreman verify the right lug and die were used on a termination. Phase identification should still be done with tape or labels to your project standard.
7) Is Color Keyed the same thing as Blackburn?
Yes, same line. The lug carries the Color Keyed / Blackburn brand label, with Color Keyed as the sub brand, so a spec calling out either name is pointing at this family of lugs. Country of origin is Mexico.
