Color-Keyed 60168 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Color Keyed 60168 lug take 400 kcmil aluminum cable, and can I use it on copper?
The Color Keyed (Blackburn) 60168 compression lug is sized for 400 kcmil cable and the lug body itself is aluminum. Aluminum-bodied compression lugs of this type are dual-rated AL/CU only when the manufacturer marks them so; what is on record here is the 400 kcmil cable size, aluminum construction, and the 35 kV rating. Order it for 400 kcmil conductor and match the die to the color code (green) when you crimp.
2) Is this lug rated for medium-voltage cable terminations?
Yes, it carries a 35 kV voltage rating, which covers 15 kV, 25 kV and 35 kV class shielded cable terminations in utility and industrial switchgear. For 600 V building feeders it is also usable, though a 600 V rated lug is the usual choice there.
3) What does the green color coding on a Color Keyed lug actually mean when I'm crimping?
Green is the die index, not a phase marking. On the Color Keyed system the barrel color tells the installer which color-coded die and die set to use in the compression tool, so a 400 kcmil green-coded barrel gets the green die. Treat it as crimp identification; use separate phase tape or sleeves if you need phase marking in the gear.
4) Why choose a long barrel lug over a standard barrel for 400 kcmil terminations?
A long barrel gives more crimp length, so you can place two or more compressions on the same barrel. That spreads the mechanical hold and lowers contact resistance on a large conductor like 400 kcmil, which matters on high-current feeders and medium-voltage terminations. A standard barrel usually takes a single crimp and is fine on smaller conductors and lower current duty.
5) Does the 60168 lug come insulated, or do I have to sleeve it myself?
Bare metal, no insulation on the barrel. You supply the insulation, so plan on heat-shrink, a cold-shrink boot, or tape per your termination kit, especially on the 35 kV class terminations this lug is rated for.
6) Is the Color Keyed 60168 lug UL listed for inspection sign-off?
It is listed under UL file E9809. That is the reference an inspector or a spec writer will want cited alongside the 400 kcmil size and 35 kV rating on the submittal.
7) Is Color Keyed the same as Blackburn when I'm matching a spec?
Same product line. Color Keyed is the sub-brand and the lug is labeled Color Keyed / Blackburn, so a drawing calling out a Blackburn compression lug and one calling out Color Keyed are pointing at the same family. The part number to order against is 60168.
8) What is the country of origin for the 60168 lug for a government or Buy America submittal?
Manufactured in Mexico. If your project carries a domestic-content requirement, that is the figure to put in front of your compliance reviewer before you commit the quantity.
