Blackburn TR61 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the Blackburn TR61 compression sleeve used for?
The TR61 is a compression splice sleeve for joining wire or cable, used on service entrance work. It joins two conductors, one entered from each end, and the joint is made by crimping the sleeve with a compression tool rather than by bolting or setscrews.
2) Is the Blackburn TR61 sleeve insulated, or do I have to tape or heat-shrink the splice?
It is a bare sleeve with no insulation, so the splice has to be insulated in the field. Plan on tape, heat shrink, or a cold shrink tube rated for the circuit voltage over the finished crimp.
3) Does the Blackburn TR61 splice meet the connector standard inspectors ask about?
The TR61 passes the requirements of ANSI C119.4, the standard covering connectors for use between aluminum-to-aluminum, aluminum-to-copper, and copper-to-copper conductors. That is the citation to give an inspector reviewing a spliced service entrance conductor.
4) Can I install the Blackburn TR61 sleeve with a hand crimper or do I need a hydraulic tool?
It is a compression connector, so it must be crimped with a die-type compression tool, not tightened with a wrench or hand-twisted. A sleeve of this size is normally made up with a hydraulic or battery-powered compression head and the correct die for the conductor being spliced.
5) Can I use a compression sleeve like the TR61 where the splice has to be permanent and buried in a gutter?
Yes, that is the case for a compression sleeve. Unlike a bolted split-bolt or a setscrew connector, a crimped splice has no torque to lose and cannot back off, so it suits locations you do not intend to re-open. The tradeoff is that it is not reusable: to redo the joint you cut the sleeve out and splice again.
6) Is the Blackburn TR61 sold individually or in a bag of multiples?
The TR61 is sold each, so the quantity you order is the number of splices you get. Count one sleeve per conductor joint, not one per service.
7) Where is the Blackburn TR61 made?
The TR61 is manufactured in Mexico. That is the country of origin to list on submittal or Buy American documentation for the connector.
