Thomas & Betts TB27SA – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Thomas & Betts TB27SA conduit body fit a Crouse-Hinds or Appleton Form 7 body I'm replacing?
Yes. The TB27SA is a Form 7 conduit body, and Thomas & Betts states its conduit bodies and covers are interchangeable with Crouse-Hinds, Appleton and OZ Gedney Form 7 conduit bodies. That means both the body and the cover swap, so you can reuse an existing Form 7 cover and gasket or put a T&B cover on a competitor's body.
2) Does the TB27SA have tapered threads, and do I need bushings to protect the wire?
Threads are tapered NPT, which is what rigid and IMC conduit uses, so it threads straight onto standard conduit with the usual thread compound. Integral bushings are already built into the hubs to protect conductor insulation, so there is nothing extra to buy for that.
3) What standards does the Thomas & Betts TB27SA conduit body meet for a government or institutional spec?
The TB27SA is listed to UL Standard, is CSA compliant, and meets Fed Spec W-C-586D. That Federal Specification callout is the one that usually matters on government and institutional submittals for conduit outlet bodies.
4) Is the TB27SA conduit body OK in a wash-down or corrosive plant area?
It is made for that kind of work. The TB27SA body is sand cast aluminum, and Thomas & Betts calls out food and beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical processing and other corrosive environments as intended uses. Aluminum does have limits, so for areas with caustic cleaners or chlorides in direct contact, confirm chemical compatibility for your specific process.
5) Can I use a Type TB conduit body as an outlet for a light fixture or a wiring device?
Yes, that's one of its listed uses. Type TB bodies act as mounting outlets for wiring devices and lighting fixtures, and they also serve as pull outlets while conductors are being installed and as access points for splices in branch conductors.
6) Does a Type TB conduit body make a 90 degree turn, or do I still need an elbow?
A Type TB body makes the 90 degree bend itself, so you do not need a separate elbow at that point. The advantage over a factory elbow is access: the removable cover lets you pull conductors through the turn and get back into the run later for maintenance or system changes. Where you only need a bend and never need access, a sealed elbow is the simpler fitting.
7) Is a cover and gasket included with the TB27SA, or do I order those separately?
Order the TB27SA as the conduit body itself. Covers are a separate item, and because it is a Form 7 body any Form 7 cover works, including Crouse-Hinds, Appleton and OZ Gedney Form 7 covers. Match the cover type to the use: a blank cover for a pull or splice point, or a device or fixture cover where the body is serving as an outlet.
8) How is the TB27SA conduit body packaged, and what does one weigh?
Each TB27SA weighs 0.7 lbs, and the standard outer carton holds 5 pieces. Carton dimensions are 9.75 x 7 x 3.12 inches. Useful numbers if you are staging material by the box for a multi-run job.
