CONFAST LSL14 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size drill bit do I need for a CONFAST lag shield anchor?
The bit matches the outside diameter of the shield, not the bolt. For the 1/4 inch lag shield drill 1/2 inch, for 3/8 inch drill 5/8 inch, for 1/2 inch drill 3/4 inch, and for 5/8 inch drill 7/8 inch. Those are carbide masonry bit sizes for hammer drilling concrete or masonry. The anchor size in the name refers to the lag screw thread it accepts, which is why the hole is always larger than the size you ordered.
2) How deep does the hole have to be for a CONFAST LSL lag shield?
Drill at least to the minimum embedment for the size you are using: 1-1/2 inches for the 1/4 inch, 2-1/2 inches for the 3/8 inch, and 3-1/2 inches for both the 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch. Drill a little deeper than that so cuttings have somewhere to go, and size your lag screw as fixture thickness plus embedment depth.
3) What size lag screw goes into a 1/2 inch lag shield anchor?
A 1/2 inch lag screw. The internal thread on the 1/2 inch shield is 1/2 inch - 13 with 1-7/8 inches of thread length. The other sizes run 1/4 inch - 10, 3/8 inch - 7 and 5/8 inch - 5, with internal thread lengths of 1 inch, 1-1/2 inches and 2-1/4 inches. Match the lag to the anchor size and make sure the screw engages the full thread length.
4) How much weight will a CONFAST lag shield anchor hold in concrete?
Published pull-out values are 225 lbs for the 1/4 inch, 555 lbs for the 3/8 inch, 1,095 lbs for the 1/2 inch and 1,297 lbs for the 5/8 inch. Those are ultimate pull-out figures, not working loads, so apply your own safety factor (commonly 4:1 in the trade) and reduce for cracked or low strength base material.
5) How tight should I torque a lag screw into these shields?
Do not exceed 5 ft-lbs on the 1/4 inch, 10 ft-lbs on the 3/8 inch, or 20 ft-lbs on the 1/2 inch. Zamac alloy shields strip if you keep pulling on them with an impact gun, so snug the fixture and stop. If the shield spins in the hole the hole is oversized and you need a fresh location.
6) How far from a slab edge and from each other can these anchors be set?
Minimum edge distance is 2-1/2 inches for the 1/4 inch shield, 3-1/8 inches for the 3/8 inch, 3-3/4 inches for the 1/2 inch and 4-3/8 inches for the 5/8 inch. Minimum anchor-to-anchor spacing is 5 inches for the 1/4 inch, 7-1/2 inches for the 1/2 inch and 8-3/4 inches for the 5/8 inch. Crowd them closer than that and you risk spalling the concrete and losing the published pull-out.
7) Can I drill through the fixture and use the hole in the part as my guide?
Yes, if the fixture hole is big enough for the shield to pass through. Installing in place needs a fixture hole of at least 9/16 inch for the 1/4 inch anchor, 3/4 inch for the 3/8 inch, 7/8 inch for the 1/2 inch and 1 inch for the 5/8 inch. If you are spotting the hole instead, setting the shield first and then bringing the fixture over it, the fixture hole only needs to clear the lag screw: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 or 5/8 inch respectively.
8) Are lag shield anchors OK to use outdoors or in damp areas?
The CONFAST LSL lag shield carries a Wet location rating and the body is Zamac alloy, so it is used in damp and exterior concrete. Pair it with a lag screw finished for the exposure (hot dip galvanized or stainless) since the screw, not the shield, is usually what corrodes first.
9) Should I use the long lag shield or the short one?
Length is about embedment. The long LSL gives deeper engagement in the base material, which is what you want in brick, block, older or softer concrete where the surface layer is not reliable, or where the load is higher. A short shield is for thin slabs and shallow prep where you cannot get the depth. If you can drill to the minimum embedment listed for your size, the long version is the stronger choice.
10) Is a lag shield removable, or is it a permanent anchor like a wedge anchor?
A lag shield is a female anchor, meaning the lag screw threads into it and can be backed out, leaving the shield in the hole. That makes it a good pick for equipment, conduit strut, railings and fixtures that may come off for service. A wedge anchor is a male stud that expands permanently and cannot be reused once set, so if you need to remove and reinstall a fixture, the lag shield is the type you want.
11) What quantity comes in a box of CONFAST long lag shield anchors?
Box counts vary by size: 100 per box in 1/4 inch, 50 per box in 3/8 inch, and 25 per box in 1/2 inch, 5/8 inch and 3/4 inch. Anchors are sold by the box, so order in those increments when you are planning a run of fixture mounts.
