1) What does the Corbin Russwin CRMELR-36 retrofit kit actually include, and what do I still need to order?
The CRMELR kit is a rail assembly, the controller, and a touchbar end cap. It ships with no switches and no latch, so if your existing device needs a new latch or request-to-exit and latch-monitor switching, those come separately. It is a component-level upgrade for a device already hung on the door, not a complete exit device.
2) Will this Corbin Russwin MELR kit work on my existing exit device?
Only on ED5000 push pad exit devices. The kit is built for that chassis and rail, so an ED5000 series device already on the opening is what it retrofits. Put it on a Von Duprin, Precision, or any other maker's device and the rail and controller will not mate.
3) What is the narrowest door stile this ED5000 hardware will mount on?
4-1/2 inches (114mm) minimum stile width. That rules out aluminum storefront narrow stile doors, which typically run well under that. If your stile is narrower you need a narrow stile device family, not ED5000 hardware.
4) Does the ED5000 fit a 2 inch thick door, or only 1-3/4?
1-3/4 inch (44mm) is the standard thickness. Thicker doors are handled by suffix: D200 for 2 inch and D214 for 2-1/4 inch. That has to be specified when the device is ordered, so on a retrofit confirm which thickness option the device on your door was built for before you order rail components.
5) Will the ED5200 latch reach into my existing strike?
The rim latchbolt is a stainless steel pullman type with a 3/4 inch (19mm) throw and a deadlocking auxiliary latch. It works against the surface mounted 3/8 inch roller strike with a positive locking plate and shims, and the shims are what let you take up gap on a frame that is not perfectly aligned. A strike set for a different throw or a mortise style keeper will not do.
6) Should I use a rim exit device or a surface vertical rod on my pair of doors?
A rim device, the ED5200, latches into a single strike, so on a pair it needs a removable mullion between the leaves. The surface vertical rod version, the ED5400, latches at the head and the sill instead, which is how you secure a pair with no mullion and keep the full clear opening. Throws differ: SVR is 3/4 inch pullman at the top and a 5/8 inch deadbolt at the bottom.
7) Is the ED5000 approved for a fire rated opening?
The ED5000 is UL and cUL listed as panic and 3-hour fire exit hardware, meets NFPA 101 and NFPA 80, and is California State Fire Marshal approved. It is ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1. That combination is what most institutional and government specs call for on a labeled cross-corridor or stair door.
8) Is the CRMELR retrofit kit handed?
ED5000 devices are non-handed as standard, so the rail and touchbar hardware go on either hand. The exceptions are double cylinder devices and lever trim, which are handed. If you are only replacing the rail assembly, controller, and end cap, handing is not a decision you have to make.
9) How much does an ED5000 rim device stick out from the door face, and will it clear a wall on a 180 degree swing?
Projection is 3-1/4 inches (83mm) active and 2-3/4 inches (70mm) when dogged down. Use the 3-1/4 inch figure for clearance to door stops, adjacent leaves, and anything the touchbar could strike in the fully open position.
10) Can I mechanically dog an ED5000 open, and does the MELR option change that?
Standard dogging is single point 1/4 turn hex key. Cylinder dogging and electric dogging are available options instead. Note that a fire rated exit device cannot be dogged, so on a labeled opening the hold-open has to come from the electrified latch retraction and the fire alarm interface, not from the hex key.
11) What is the SecureBolt option on an ED5200S and when is it worth specifying?
SecureBolt swaps the pullman latch for a deadbolt style latchbolt, 3/4 inch (19mm) projection by 1 inch wide, positively deadlocked by an auxiliary bolt. It resists the loiding and pry attacks a beveled pullman is more open to, which is why it turns up on exterior and after-hours doors in retail and multi-tenant buildings.
