1) Is the Corbin Russwin ML2055-M31 the complete mortise lock or just the lever trim?
Lever trim only. The ML2055-M31 is the outside/inside lever trim for the ML2000 Series classroom function, and it mounts to an ML2000 Series mortise lockbody you already have in the door. If your door has no mortise case in it, the trim alone will not lock anything, you need the lockbody as well. Buying trim makes sense when the case is sound and the lever, rose or escutcheon is worn, bent or being changed to a different design.
2) Do I have to order the ML2055 lever trim left hand or right hand?
Handing is not a stocking problem here. The trim is field reversible, and the ML2000 lock uses a Quick Reversible latchbolt that re-hands without taking the lock case apart. The one exception on the lever side is the Dirke design, which is sold as a specific left hand or right hand lever, so that choice does have to be made on the order.
3) What do I have to specify when ordering Corbin Russwin ML2055 lever trim?
Three things decide the part: lever design, rose or escutcheon, and finish. Lever designs are Armstrong, Citation, Dirke (handed left or right), Essex, Lustra in cast or wrought, Newport, Princeton and Regis. The mounting is either an A rose at 2-1/4 inch diameter, an F rose at 2-7/8 inch diameter, or an M or N escutcheon. Get the rose or escutcheon size right first, it governs how much of the old trim's footprint on the door face gets covered.
4) What does the classroom function on the ML2055 actually do at the door?
Classroom function means the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key from the outside, and the inside lever is always free to exit. There is no inside button or turn, so the door cannot be left locked by a student and a teacher has to step into the corridor with a key to secure it. If your district's lockdown policy requires locking from inside the room, classroom function is the wrong function and you want a classroom security or storeroom style instead. The ML2000 platform covers 12 functions from one lockbody, so the change is a function change on the case, not a whole new lock family.
5) Can I use my existing keys with a Corbin Russwin ML2000 classroom lock?
Yes on both sides of that question. The ML2000 lock works with new or existing Corbin Russwin key systems, and it accepts most other manufacturers' cylinders, so a building already keyed to another brand's system can usually stay on that keyway. Supplied standard, the cylinder is brass with a 6-pin L4 keyway and comes 0-bitted for the locksmith to key. Note that the cylinder rides in the lockbody, not in the lever trim.
6) Will an ML2000 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset prep?
That is the standard configuration. The ML2000 is built for 1-3/4 inch (44mm) doors with a 2-3/4 inch (70mm) backset, with optional thicknesses available for thicker doors. The pocket has to take a lockcase of 5-7/8 x 4 x 15/16 inches and an 8 x 1-1/4 inch armored front. Center to center from lever to cylinder is 3-5/8 inches, and lever to thumbturn is 2-7/16 inches, which is what to measure against the existing face prep when you are swapping trim onto an old door.
7) Will the ML2000 latch pick up my existing ANSI strike, or do I need a new one?
The latchbolt throws 3/4 inch (19mm) and the deadbolt throws a full 1 inch, against an ANSI straight lip strike measuring 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches with a 1-1/8 inch lip to center. If the frame already carries a standard 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike prep at a 2-3/4 inch backset, the latch lines up. Where an old strike has a shorter lip to center or a non-ANSI cutout, plan on the new strike. The auxiliary latchbolt has a 9/16 inch effective throw and deadlocks the main latch, so the strike lip has to be deep enough to depress it fully or the deadlocking feature does nothing.
